Auger engines

I know how people feel about the present motor on the strikemaster but how are guys liking the latest engine on the jiffy augers? I read that they are made in china..? How are they holding up to the harsh weather and the treatment that ice anglers can sometimes dish out on their equipment? Is it better then the tecumseh that was so good and continues to be on older models? Just curius I see lots of adds for them haven't seen one in action though.

Yep... Jiffy motors are made in China... Apparently, when Tecumeseh went out of business, Strikemaster turned to Solo and Jiffy turned to a China company to produce those "Jiffy-based Motors"... There are mixed reviews in several forums... My brother has the Pro4 and he loves it very much... I've used it few times and its a beast... Too heavy for my taste as Im a Strikemaster guy myself... talk about rivalry... Just love giving him hard time about how I have an auger with marvelous german engineering while he has that 3rd world chinese engineering... LOL

I bought a jiffy 2500 lightning the first year they came out. I ice fish pretty much every weekend of the season and the only problem i have had is the little exaust flap breaking off they have since changed the muffler to exaust out the bottom. It has started down to -30. it has been carried on the back of a snow cat the entire time. I know a guy that has the 2500 stx 9 inch and it doesnt handle the extra teeth on the tip. he put a regular 9 inch bit and it handles it. And yes it is a chinese motor the same one on alot of the little chinese scooters you see. I priced a new muffler for a chinese scooter 14.00 and a jiffy is 30.00

Wonder why they would sell it if the stx didn't work on it? The tecumseh could handle the stx fine couldn't it? Does this one not have the snort of the tecumseh? I have a sm mag 2000 with the tecumseh and it has plenty of power. I run a 6 in lazer on it most of the time though. I am getting tired of shaver blades though. You hit any dirt or grain of sand and your done. When a chipper style will drill even if dull. I have heard it takes alot of holes to dull the Jiffy stx blades.

it is a 9 in. stx and it will drill but if you push it it just stops the clutch. the last year they sold 2 horse techums is a very nice auger. so far i am happy with mine but i dont think you will see it in 30 years like the old jiffys. a strike master wouldnt work for me with the plastic handles and carrying on a snowmobile

Why are you interested in Jiffys hamms? I wish I would have known you were looking for augers, I just sold my tecumseh lazermag cheap yesterday morning. I am sure you can find one floating around for a good deal, especially with the lack of thick ice this year. I liked it better than the Solos, never tried a Jiffy, am I missing something good?

Yeah I'm interested in a new or mayber slightly new auger and am curious on the chinese jiffy too. I currently have a 12 or 13 year old Jiffy model 30. It is a tank and the carb is tempermental. If the barometer drops I have to get it re adjusted! The one thing I still like is that my chipper blade must be at least 4 years old and still going. And I fish 3 days week. But anyway I am seriously thinking about an upgrade and just don't hear alot about the jiffy gas augers. Or is the solo the way to go?

Thumbs up for older Strike Master auger engines. In 2003, my auger spent 2 weeks in 24' of water. I went through thin ice with my 4-wheeler and the auger + a few other things spent some time at the bottom of the lake. When the ice was thick enough, under water camera in hand, I fished it out. Still works like a champ!

That is crazy still works! So I was headed to get a used flasher today and the guy didn't call back...so headed home I stopped at our local bait shop and an old timer had a new 2004 model jiffy stealth 2hp. He got it and just used it this december. He had another auger that finally died. Anyway he decided he is done ice fishing and wanted to sell this Brand new auger. He filled it with gas over christmas with non oxy/mix and drilled 4or 5 holes for his grand kids to fish. That is it. I ran it at the shop and 3 pulls it ran like a dream. tecumseh 2 hp. he had 300 bucks on it and I got it for much less. This is all steel . No plastic but the gas tank and blade cover. I took it to local lake and it ran really good. First time ever running a jiffy. Not used to the blade spinning so fast. Anyway I kinda impulse bought this thing and I'm going to try it out for a bit and see if I like it more then the laser. It is an 8" which i'm not used to. I have used a 6" for the last few years. I know I like the motor, just the high rpm drill I have to see about. As I said this day started out going to get a flasher. grin Looks like the fl-8se is going to do the job for a while. smile

Thanks Mike, I have only ran it a little bit but it is one that will last for year the way it is built. A little heavier than the SM but same engine, Tecumseh power! Not sure about get together yet. If I don't make it over there show the boys a big catch at the weigh in! Tight lines wink

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
