Well last night I hurt my ankle playing basketball. I went to the doctor and she said I have a Grade 2 high ankle sprain, luckily not a break. So I did some ligament damage, but I shouldnt need surgery. I just gotta use crutches and a brace when I'm walking.

I was thinking, how are crutches gonna work on ice? Anybody got any experience? I guess my brother will have to just drag me out there on a sled or something grin

Wear ice cleats and then put a nail or spike through the rubber ends of the crutches so you can dig into the ice with them.

My buddy sprained his ankle the night before hunting opener 2 seasons ago. He had a brace plus crutches but we still went hunting. In the woods he obviously didn't use the crutches he just walked slow and laced his boot as tight as possible. He was careful about putting weight on the bad ankle and made sure to only place his foot on level ground (not on rocks or logs). I made sure I hunted near him so I could be there to drag the deer and also walk to and from the stand with him in case he needed a hand.

He got through the 4 day hunt just fine, just took a little patience and a little pain tolerance.

In the end nothing will keep a good man down.

Oh Man.

I broke by tibia and fibula Dec 9 2008. Had surgery. Made it into a permy ice fishing house by the end of January 2009... on crutches. Of course, I drove up to it, crutched it ten feet and then I was inside.

GO SLOW, and you will be fine.

On a side note, you need to be wearing an ankle brace. My daugter sprained her ankle a few weeks ago. They gave her a neat little brace that worked very well.

Broke my foot last February and needed surgery on it. I was in a foot cast for 2 weeks and as soon as I had the cast off and found out I could get my foot into a boot I was out on the ice!! I think you're biggest issue will be swelling and whether you can comfortably fit your foot in your boot.

I almost broke my nose twice while on cruthes and hiting the ice..

you would be suprised on how fast you go down with out the support of a leg,

You could always stud out your crutches laugh used for non slip and it could double as a spear wink

They make Ice cleats for crutches. They just flip down when you need them and they have 4 spikes on the bottom, just dont use them in the house they make a mess of the hardwood. When my dad hurt his ankle in colorado the ski patrol put them on his crutches. And a couple years ago when I crushed my foot I used them for getting out to my uncles shack and they worked great along with cleats on my boots. I would try and find a pair just for everyday use crutches are really good at slipping out on the ice.

Strange coincidence that you posted this. Just this afternoon I stepped into a snow covered muskrat hole and wrecked my ankle. Sitting here with my foot in a bucket of ice right now.

I'd just add some cleats to your boots and you should be fine. Personally, I'd leave the crutches on shore, as that's just asking for further injuries.

or u could suck it up?...its an ankle SPRAIN..... i tore my acl , was fishing a week after surgery. I'm sure ill be fine.

+1

I broke my ankle, and wore an ankle brace for 2 months. grin

Side note, now i can crack my ankle by moving it in just about any direction wink

Other broken bones with no help from a dr: Shoulder, elbow, both pinky fingers, thumb joint, middle finger joint, there's probably others but i'm not going to put much thought into this. Suck it up.

Well just got a call from the doctor. Turns out the radiologist found a hairline fracture in my fibula. So i get to wear a walking boot for the next 4 weeks. But on the bright side, I can go ice fishing in a boot. So I cant complain too much!
Aircast? I wore one of those for three months.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
