Gordie
I like the wood ones HL and your hole size depends on the room you have once your shack is folded down but 24x38,40 will work fine
pike79
I use an eskimo quickflip 2 for spearing I cut the hole with an eight in. auger four holes across 3 deep one in center to pull out block
Archerysniper
It depends on how much room you will need or feel comfortable sliding around next too. I try to go around 36x28 in my porty which doesn't give me much room but it helps getting the fish.
harvey lee
I would guess a person has to have the edge of the hole fairly close to ones feet or one would have to bend over and the back could get sore.or does that not happen? Archerysniper
If you get into it big time you could get a spearing chair its like a massage charir that you lean against,I believe hawkeye has one. Yep normally half my boots are over the hole to keep down the back aches. And MJ not everyone is built like a Sasquatch like you

Woody Erickson
Try Axel's Tackle Box in Waterville. He has some of the new Bruell decoys as well as some from local carvers. Also has sucker harnesses.I spear out of a portable. Darkness isn't terribly important, depends on how much glare/reflection you can handle.I have found that mounting the cheapest and largest arbor fly reel to a spreader pole works good, as long as it has some drag to hold up your heaviest decoy.A carabiner clipped to the top pole of a portable works well. Anchor spear to carabiner. An ice saw isn't necessary. Auger holes close together, or overlapping, then chisel any remaining ice that may be between them.Last time out, I ended up with about a 3.5 foot by 5.5 foot spear hole. Got carried away with the power auger. It was like watching football on the big screen. I think I need to install a seat belt. When is the next GTG?
