this weekend myself & 2 buddies were on a mission. while scouting for ducks in itasca county this fall we found a lake that looked like it could hold some fish. problem was it's a 3 mile atv ride & then a mile walk through the woods to get to it. by the look of it, i dont know that this lake hasever really been fished. we decided to give it a try. we knew nothing about the lake, it wasnt on lakefinder so we didnt have a map, & it didnt even have a name. we've done this before and found lakes with no fish, lakes with only small fish, and lakes that were really good. we put in the coords on the gps and started walking. we figured we'd have to drill a few hundred holes before we found em, but we just started around the middle of the lake, drilled 6 holes in what turned out to be 32' & started marking suspended fish. they turned out to be big crappies! we kept 2 limits of 11"-13" (14 were 13") and we started cpr'ing. we ended up keeping 27 since 6 little guys swallowed the jigging spoon & couldnt be released. the thing i couldnt believe was we released 4 fish around 15" measured on a tape. i kept 1 15 1/2" to put on the wall. i bet we caught over 150 fish in 6hrs. with ALOT of fish in the 13"-14" range. we also got about a dozen nice 8"-9" gills mixed in with the crappies. next time we go out there i think i'm gonna keep a few more of those 15"+ fish for a stringer mount since i've always wanted one. moral of the story is there are still untouched lakes out there, you just need to put in the time to go through a few pieces of coal to find the diamonds! pics soon to follow.

I leave in the morning for itaska county just north of Grand Rapids to fish some of those little lakes out in the woods. Me and my friends started makeing this trip a few years ago just to fourwheeling and we just thought hey lets try fishing one of these little lakes and now its a full blown fishing trip instead of just a week of trail riding. You do strike out on a few of the lakes but we always catch a bunch of really nice fish every year. Good luck and keep exploring I think we are up to about 20 lakes that are producing good fish for us in that area.
