NAIFC on Pelican Jan. 8th!!

Recommended Posts

It's like a bass fishing tournament where your team weighs in your best 8 sunfish and 8 crappies and the best weight wins. Some of the best ice fisherman in the world will be there. You'll have a chance to learn from them and compete against them. There is also a kids camp on the Saturday before the tournament that brought over 200 kids to the event last year. Each one of these kids got a free ice rod and on ice instruction. If you don't sign up to fish I encourage you to come check out the festivities.

Seems kind of odd that they would come to what just a few years ago was known as just a Duck slough and not a bigger named lake? wink

Leech, I take it you haven't been out there. Last years average for the leaders where eight 9+ inch gills and eight 11+ inch crappies. Seem's like a pretty darn good lake to me.

Wonder how the bad ice year so far will effect this tourny? Is the rescue squad going to be on standby? wink You know there will be some knuckle-head out there rolling out in his duelly. If the ice is still bad, could the sheriff pull the permit and cancel it due to "unsafe conditions"?

joneshat, yes I have fished it and think it has been a very good fishery. I have posted this before that even though I am also a Duck hunter I would hate to see it drained down until the good fishing is over or for the DNR to manage it some how for both ducks and fish. I guess the point I was making is usually large fishing events are held on more well known lakes that haven't just popped up with some good fish in then as Pelican has in the last few years. Like Tonka, Waconia, Clearwater etc. But hopefully they have some good ice by then. It sounds like a fun time! smile

Leech, I hear what you are saying, but ironically this has been the most popular and most attended NAIFC event in the last 3 years. Monticello, pulled out the red carpet last year and their efforts showed. Ice is good. I've been running my snowmobile on the lake for the last 3 weeks. 8-9 inches everywhere I've been.

Leech, you're right I fish the NAIFC circuit so I am excited to have a tournament in my backyard. Considering that my backyard is the border of Monti and Big Lake not sure why I would be worried on who makes the money since your so concerned. Besides, lot's of money from this tournament does make it's way to Big Lake. Specially, since 3/4ths of the fisherman on the circuit use Strikemaster augers where they already have and will be stopping by the shop to spend money. Lots of kids from Big Lake will get a free rod and experience something outdoors instead for video games for a day. Don't have to be from Monti to get something from this event. Hopes this answers your question. Maybe you should sign up and fish? Or help out with the kids camp?

So where is everyone supposed to park? Maybe I'm wrong, but I have a hard time believing there is drivable ice, like 12" or more. It's not going to be making much ice this week either.

there is a land owner on the north side of the lake that provides access to the lake for the tournament. I have reason to believe that Jack Baker(NAIFC Tournament Director) has it worked out with this same land owner to have parking on this persons land since it is just a field and since the lake will not be drivable. I will try to email Jack to confirm this or find out what the plan will be for parking.

Here is Jacks response on the NAIFC forum about the launch location.

"Right now it looks great for atv and sled use. The no snow has been a blessing... No run off and the cold enough nights have built some pretty good ice. Looks like one more warm day and then some single digits nights... So the future ice looks great also.

We will launch out of the same farm as last year... off of Fallon Ave. use the public access until Sunday... Then we use the farm access.

Great launch sight... Works great."

If some of the "best" ice fisherman in the world will be there, can we get some names and credentials. Seen videos of some NAIFC events and never heard of any of the guys.
