What Is My Reel(Real) Problem

Recommended Posts

Took son out for first time ice fishing action but unfortunately i have a serious problem with spinning reels...my line (and his) keeps getting wrapped around everything(handle, bale wire, under spinning part of bale) but the bale, i am very confused, just put new line on all reels this fall and had this happen constantly last year as well. are there any other reels to use for ice fishing other than spinning reals? or am i just an [PoorWordUsage]?

Make sure when you spool the line you spool it on the same way it came off the spool.

Also I've discovered that you can hand stretch mono to straighten it out so it's not so twisty.

Another thing is to never reel against the drag. That is one of the worst things you can do to twist up your line. If that is happening a lot, you probably need to tighten your drag up a bit.

Sometimes i have this problem too. I think its mostly because im an [PoorWordUsage] and dont do a good job putting line on however, I find it helps to leave off filling your spool up completely. Try putting a little less line on than you normally would next time you spool up and see if that helps and make sure you are keeping the line tight when putting it onto the spool so it goes on tight and even. I've also found that some reels just have problems with this more than others so it could be a problem with your gear as well.

Do not reel against the drag like stated above. It will make the line coil and spring off causing major problems. Try and pull on it to stretch it or tie it to something and let a lot out and pull and then reel it back on under good tension.

all of my equip was bought used over last 2 years...i think it could be all the above...with weather being 40 tomorrow, time to get out the bbq & grill, will work on reels at same time. If i decide the reel(s) r just [PoorWordUsage], r there any good recommendations out there?

Walk off a couple hundred feet and reel back in pinching the line without anything attached, if this don't help then may be the reel or brand of line...Spraying with Reel Magic and letting set overnight helps some to. I always spray mine when spooling and let sit a day befor using....

One thing i always do after i spool up is to tie a snap swivel on and then snap it to a tree in the yard. Then walk out till all the line is out. Then wind it in slow

and the twist will come out as the swivel turns by the tree.Is it possible you have to heavy of line than the reel calls for

It could be to heavy of line for the reel or the jig. if the jig cant pull the line off very well it may spring off when it gets enough slack. You ever wonder what our neighbors think of us when the see us tying lines to things and walking away only to reel it back in. We must look like were nuts.

thx for the tips & idea checks...i will defintely be attaching to something tomorrow and let it all out, then respool slowly i redid 4 reels of brand new 2lb line so i dont think the line is too heavy & both lures were shrimpo types for panfish, very light & small

I will be rechecking all of the above aformentioned ideas: drag, respooling, tightening/stretching line, and i may have too much line on as well as local retailer told me to always fill reel completey full so line comes off easier. for some reason when reeling in though it always gets wrapped around the handle or under line holder part as it moves back and forth

I'd go with too much line. In the winter I put very little line on compared to the summer...I just don't go throug line. I might have, oh, 100 feet of line on my ice reels. The deepest water I fish is 30 ft (this is on my walleye rods, I should say), so that's plenty of line for me (unless I hook a northern).

On my panfish rods I have more line because I fish a bit deeper--maybe i put 150 ft of line on. Everything works better for me if I have less line on the reel.

On the spool there should be line/yards 6/220 for example means it will hold 200 yards of 6 pound test. Also the modle number of the reel will say it's size, example Sedona 500, 750, 1000, 2500 ect.. lower number the smaller the reel and smaller line diamiters it was designed for... Most common ice reels are 100U and 300U Cardinals, 500 series Shimanos ect...For 2 pound test these are the size reels you should be looing for. I match my line/reels to the middle recomended line weight on the spool, if it says 2-4-6 then 4 ect...

thx for all the notes.

i took 20-30% of line off of all reels to day, i do believe that will help a lot, but while doing this, was not impressed at all by the amount of memory i was seeing in this brand new line that i bought from major outdoor retailer 2 months ago (trilene micro ice) they said this was the best stuff (also saw some endoresements on here)but hope they will at least work better now. also going through old unused items i bought on line and found flat wheel rodnreel setup so rigged that for my son, hope this very simple setup will be better & more effective for him

Stretch it as Dtro stated and spool up a half spool. No need for all the extra line. If it was on a summer casting reel, then maybe but you are not casting or looking for a long cast.

I had purchased some ice lines that seem to have alot of memory after they have sat spooled for the off season.

Next time you purchase line, find one with low memory and that may also help you but I would still fill the spool only half way.

See what the line does after being stretched out and putting less on the reel. I have a feeling it may give you better results. I've had decent luck with micro ice in the past. As far as bad advice, I would say for ice fishing yes you were given bad advice. The reason for filling a spool to near capacity is to get the most distance while casting. Not helpful when ice fishing.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
