Scott K
Tom, I use a couple different ones, Advance system care, and CCleaner. I just run a scan once a week, while I have nothing going on.
Nick Kuhn
CCleaner has a registry fixer. Beware that a lot of sites with the scan for free/pay to fix are something known as rouge anti-spyware. They will always tell you there are problems with your computer (some even cause them themselves) and say the only way to fix them is by paying for their service. Do not click those links, they are every bit as bad as a virus.
Jim Almquist
I just use CCleaner. Works great!!
upnorth
Be very cautious with online scanners, buggy or malware/spyware like posted above. I wouldn't mess to much with the registry unless you have some symptoms.
harvey lee
Don't really have any issues but the system is a bit slower than it use to be.I do defrag all the time and thought maybe cleaning the registry might help with the speed. upnorth
Try CCleaner just run the cleaner first and then if is still an issue, try the registry cleaner.

I did the Ccleaner and now my hompape-search engine changed.I will probably forget the registry cleaner as this free stuff seems to always give me issue. upnorth
O yeah you need to watch the options on any installer even the good ones. They aren't totally free. The search engine thing is common lately. But you can check it off at time of install.

Shack
Your PC's registry is the most sacred, short of personal files, areas within a PC. Giving any program access to your registry should be taken seriously. An article which I read a year or two back, claimed that up to 99% of these so call "Registry Cleaners" were basically infested with mainly spyware, but also maleware. Even with factoring out the price which some people paid for these cleaners, them pulling your data and stats off you earns them upwards of $60-$100 per year in-return for the info. CCleaner has always been a trusted one of mine. It may seem weak and simple, but when configured wrongly, it could mess your entire registry. I always option to backup the registry before repairing, as just a little CYPC so if things do screw up, I can at least have that to work from. Tom try restarting your PC. Some times a refresh of the reg can bring up something which has been lost.
pureinsanity
General rule of thumb for people who are not familiar with registry files...Don't touch em.Cc cleaner is a pretty good one though. Just gotta make sure you don't delete and registry values that you might need for programs cc cleaner might think are bad.
Orlip
I decided to take the recommendation's here for Ccleaner. I am happy so far. Noticed a bigincrease in the speed of the computer. Used it to stop certain apps from turning on at start up also that don't need to be. I know you can set most programs to not turn on at start up but for some reason they turn back on. I did try 1 other program that was on the top of the search (not sure if I can mention the products name here) but it would never finish the scan. upnorth
Malwarebytes and Combofix work well. I normally scan with Malwarebytes first then combofix as a follow up.
