how many use tip ups and who doesn't

I like fishing tip ups, and almost always put one out when I'm panfishing, hoping for a northern cruising in the area. I'm interested in the tip ups for rod and reel, and will be looking to buy one shortly.

Look at the HT Ice Rigger. it is a tip up that you use with a rod and reel. they are less than $20.00.

you run the line to the clip and when the fish pulls the line it causes the clip to release and when this happens the flag goes up.

you can get the riggers at fleet farm.

here is some pics. hope it helps. just remeber to set the drag loose so the fish can run without breaking the line.

to keep the hole from freezing you can put one of those foam covers over the hole like some people use with regular tip ups. I have one of the strikemaster heat pumps (not really a heat unit but it circulates the water in the hole keeping if from freezing).

I like using tip-ups, the circle ones are my favorite. Just wish they would make a 11" or 12" dia.

Nothing like having about 3 kids and few adults out, with everybody having one rod and one tipup, and hearing a kid yell "FLAAAAAAGGGGGG!!!" and running like a track star to get to it

I have them out (one rod and one tip up per person) until only panfish, they are great for our cabin guests who don't regularly ice fish, as it is more social sort of, for those not as into jigging. And it is always exciting with a flag up, might be nothing but might be big pike, walleye, bass, or a tiny snot rocket

I love using tipups, I learned how to ice fish using tipups so they are still a strong part of my arsenal when I'm not chasing panfish.

I like going out with a few buddies and stringing our lines out and just hanging out and taking turns on the flags!

I always use mine 10 or 15 yards away when going after pike. It's a perfect deadstick.

you can do either but the problem I see with leaving the bail open is if it is windy out your line would become a tangled mess. the best option would be to find the smallest bait runner style reel you could get and use that. the problem is I don't think they make one in a ice fishing size reel. I think the smallest is equal to a 4000 size shimano summer reel.

I too learned to ice fish with tip ups as it was much more about the social aspects of it than actual fishing when I started. Put 15 people on a private 50 acre lake in WI = 45 tip ups out, add a bonfire and beverages and what a great time.

I still use them today, 1 out and jigging in MN, 2 out and jigging in WI or if just going for Pike then all tip ups. Found really like baked pike and ground pike made into pike patties. Those guys can have their walleye, I'll take my northern pike any day.

I use them once in a while while walleye fishing, but I usually prefer to have a second jigging rod or a deadstick in the fishhouse with me. But there sure is nothing better than chasing after a flag.
