St. Croix ice combo vs. Jason mitchell meat stick, which is better? mainly use for panfish and perch in a 20 inch or 24 inch. I like the sensitive tip on the meat stick because it will be good for those light biters, but also like the st.croix in UL too. The St. Croix tip is not as sensitive.

I fish about 7 different Jason Mitchell rods and would be remiss if I didn't plug the number one rod out of my bags... The 20 inch meatstick is my go to followed closely by the 24. The 28 is a bit bigger and much too hard for me and my aggressive ways to keep tips together, I have a bad time not breaking the tips on them. I have had a few and always seem to oops them up. But the 20 inch meatstick is my love. I know its a personal opinion but hey, I love mine. I lost faith in St Croix rods with the exception of their old style spring bobbers, they are very good, mainly just the spring. I too am adding the Quiverstick to my arsenol this year and I am going with a 28 inch and and Okuma 2/3 fly reel. Something to look at, but for the money, Jason Mitchell Meatstick will NEVER leave my rod bag, EVER!

Gosh I love those thorne bro rods, but i can't see myself dropping that much money on a ice rod right now. It would be nice if they had a combo, or maybe something cheaper. If i bought a rod that expensive i'd have to be a hardcore fisherman. I've read that the st. Croix rods would break on the tips. Has the tips on the jason mitchell meat stick broke while using? What are the pros snd cons of each rod?

There's a lot of contrasting differences comparing a St.Croix ice rod to a JM Meatstick. If looking at broken tips, both of the St. Croix UL rods and JM Meatsticks has have their fair share of numerous broken tips. That is something to consider but shouldn't be a given too much focus for which rod you want.

It's better to make a rod comparision of similar rod tip actions and go from there. For example look at the Frabill quick tips rods along side the JM Meatstick rods. Most of all, getting a feel for the rods in your hands is a big factor to consider. Personally it's a St.Croix rod for me, but that's what my hands like. Everybody will be different.

Got a couple of each and both have their place.

One of the spring attachement came off on the St. Croix but it was an easy fix.

I had a few of the cheaper St. Croix rods a few years back and they both were garbage, one Winter killed both!

Sorry I wasn't clear of which st.croix rod. The one I'm talking about is the cheaper combo, not the single rod with the springs. We picked up a JM 20 inch meat stick for my husband last weekend, I like the feeling of it. I have been thinking about the TB rods for two yrs now too. The St.Croix rod feels like the cheap one I currently have. I'm thinking about investing in a TB rod. confused

I have never had a Meatstick tip break in use. The only time I have broke one is cramming it into my rod case. My fault completely. I own 4 Jason Mitchell Meatsticks and won't change that anytime soon. I also own several Jason Mitchell rods from the Panfish to the Walleye, Spring bobbers and sight rods. I find them very nice and have heard the combo's are nice as well, I use my own reels, but have not ever had a rod problem.

I bought two JM 28" medium Meat Sticks last winter for pan fish and loved them until I had the tips on both of them break off on fish. cry

No need for any type of bobber with them!

My #1 go-to crappie and bluegill rod has been a HT 30" light wt. Ice Blue!

More of a noodle type rod. Very sensitive, no bobber needed, and quite tough! Also very cheap! Around $8.00 at FF!

New update.......

I called Jason Mitchell about my broken rods a couple of days ago. I received a call from Jason tonight and he said to take a picture of the broken rods, e-mail the picture to him, and he would see that two new rods are mailed to me a.s.a.p.!

Now that is what I call great service and a great warranty!

i bought a JM spring bobber rod after many suggestions late last ice on sale, tip broke on me within 3 weeks but called up JM and they had a brand new one in the mail to me within a week, even if history says the tips break, thats customer service that i can live with and will buy again, they are warrantied for 1 year.

I also broke a tip or two off Frabill meatstick rods last year. It was my fault and happened when putting the rods in sleaves, not fighting fish. The tips on these rods are delicate. I fixed the problem by throwing away the rod sleeves and using flourescent light tubes inside my rod bag. You can get the tubes at a home improvement store for a couple of bucks for 4 feet.

Klee you will be very happy with a TB rod. I have a few and a deadstick is on order now. Be warned however, you will never want to go back to a lesser rod again.

Don't waste your money on the "cheaper" ones. Again two purched first year of production both had tips break off within weeks. I called the 800 number and they said send them back for replacement but never did. At least the customer service seems good.

One rod I'd like to buy more of are the original Genz rods. The guys at TB commented on how great they are and the ones I bought were on clearance at Cabelas $15 (half off).

Some of my longest lasting rods are the cheap ones. The Ugly Stick combo's get used a lot, banged around, and they have never let me down.

Dougger, are you talking about the black ones with the crappie decal on the handle?

I also wonder since the tips are sensitive what's the heaviest size jigs i can use?

I take good care of my rods and don't abuse them, but you never know what can happen.

I had several JM rods and the tips break too easy , they are a very nice rod but the tip is too delicate and the reels have a problem with the line wraping on the skirt not the spool, also tryed the Fribils and the same problem,,,I spent the money and purchased a TB 27" power noodle and a sweetheart perch rod , no more broken tips and I love these rods...you get what you pay for!!

I have yet to fish with the JM Meatstick rod but like many say, the tip seems great. With that said, it is very fragile so take care of it. All my other JM rods I like quite a bit. I have three different St. Croix premium rods. I honestly love those rods for $20, the tips are pretty sensitive when you get them on the ice. The UL I love. And the guides the premiums have are my favorite for using outside the house, they are wide and metal so they don't ice up as quick. Tbe TB rods are on a whole nother level! You will realize that when you pay for them, but you definitely get what you pay for, great rods. But tough for me to fathom dropping $60 on an ice fishing rod. But I've used them and they are sensitive as all heck, just take care of them because the wallet might hurt if you break them!

Well, when you think about it, the JM run $40-50 already. So add a little more to it and you got a TB rod. I think it"ll be worth the investment. Yes it will hurt the wallet if that expensive rod does break.

dont waste your money on a massed produced rod, especialy a combo. The reels on the combos are all junk. spend the money and get a custom rod. You dont have to go with a tb rod. there are plenty of custom rods out there not made by tb. once you have a custom rod you will never go back to a mass produced rod

Sooo ! are u all saying the tb rods are just as sensitive as jm's but don't break off nearly as easy? If they last as well a you'll say, then it would be the cheapest way to go, or do you have to be more cautious of how u use it, becase u payed big bucks for it>

    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
