Long Underwear?

Hardyboy

Recommended Posts

So im in the market for a new set of long underwear. Im looking for recommendations or your experience with your own. Obviously warmth starts at the base so i want something that works. Ive heard good things about the under armor.

I have been through many different kinds of long underwear over the years, and have tried all of the good ones. For me, long underwear begins and ends with under armor...no questions asked. I bough my first pair two years ago, and sent the rest to the Goodwill store after just one day in the UA, and haven't missed them for a second.

Under Armour is great but a little over-priced imo. There are a lot of UA knock-offs that are just as good for much cheaper. I got some from Gander in Baxter last year about this time for 50% off and the stuff is awesome. I wear it duck hunting and ice fishing and never get cold.

Alpine design, medium weight, there a stretchy fleece kind of fabric that wicks moisture bigtime. With these on plus another fleece layer, and my strikemaster suit I can stand out in twenty below for quite a while before having to warm up.

It's called Polartec, by Alpine Design, and it's warmer than wool and underarmor together. And its not bulky.

That Polartec stuff looks great. Looks like The North Face, Guide Series, and others use their product.

I stopped using Under Armor and use the Polartec stuff now. Its fantastic!! I think mine is Guide Series from Gander Mountain.

I have used Merino wool as a top base layer and it is fine. This year (after last years brutal muzzle loader season) I wanted to take it to the next level. Got new boots, and ECWCS top and bottom from Cabela's on sale. I got the polar weight, because I sit in my tree stand all day most days. Problem is, I have a one mile hike into and out of my stand area. I've tried walking in wearing only the ECWCS on top, and the bottoms and my bibs. I put my two top layers in my tree stand and carry them in on my back. I'll be darned if I can't find a way to get to my stand any where close to what you'd call "dry". I'm in decent shape for an old fart, but this is really frustrating. I need a base layer that can handle a bit of physical exertion without getting soaked. In that regard, ECWCS Polar weight is no better than Merino wool. For both, I have to walk in with light weight clothes, change when I get there and put my walk in clothes in a plastic bag and bury them in leaves.

I will say this about the ECWCS...it is still very warm when wet. Usually, that is a trait belonging to wool alone.

For ice fishing where you are doing more sitting than moving, I have no doubt that the ECWCS will be toasty warm! Now...where is that ice?!

Have some good patagonia stuff that is an extreme base layer.. Very thin and great at wicking. I wear this under Ice Armor Base Layers. Both the Merino Wool or Poly types are good - Merino a bit warmer though..

Am on the ice almost everyday for 4 or more hours, and the stuff has held up good too!!
