How many deer can you take if you hunt 2 different managment zones

Recommended Posts

The question I have is lets say you tag 2 deer in a 2 deer area could you go to a different 2 deer area and tag 2 more deer. I looked through the regulations book and it says nothing about it, just that you can shoot a maximum of 5 deer in total using intensive harvest areas, only 1 buck in all. Just looking for a solid answer, as you hear differences in opinions. Thanks Stump

You can only shoot one deer in a lottery or hunters choice area. You can shoot two deer in any or a combination of management areas. And five deer in intensive areas. So you can take a deer in a hunters choice area or lottery area then move to a management area and shoot 2 deer with bonus tags then go to an intensive area and shoot 2 more with bonus tags. If you shoot a deer, even if it is a doe, in a hunters choice or lottery area you can not shoot a buck anywhere since you will have to use your main (buck) tag on that deer. I'm not sure if you are allowed to take all five deer in management areas if you don't exceed 2 deer in one area. That's a good question.

Once again, Jameson is correct.

Statewide, all zones of the same classification exist as one. Once you shoot one deer, you can no longer hunt a lottery or HC zone.

Once you've tagged two deer, you are no longer able to hunt a managed zone.

5 deer is the max for intensive zones and of course there is unlimited antlerless if you hunt area 601 and some other special areas like the TB zone or CWD monitoring area near Rochester. I'm not sure of those two special areas cause I don't hunt them, but their regs are fairly well spelled out in the book.

Thanks Powerstroke. I try to keep quiet on these questions when I'm not sure. Like the thread about hunting from a canoe. I would have liked to link to a page in the regs for this answer, but the best I could come up in the regs wasn't as clear as I'd like. Last year lcornice gave us a very good description of our areas limits and to my knowledge those didn't change except for obviously we now have hunters choice, but those are basically lottery areas with all of us having a doe tag.

tlbigstump, check out pages 71-72 of the 2011 regs. IMO it doesn't clearly state the answer to your question, but if you look at the wording for lottery and HC areas you can kind of figure out what they mean for managed areas.

Quote:
Lottery deer areas: The bag limit is one deer total per year, regardless

of license type. If you take a deer in a lottery deer area, you cannot take

another deer in another lottery or hunter choice deer area. However, you

can take deer in managed or intensive deer areas provided you adhere

to the regulations and bag limits for those areas. Bonus permits are not

valid in lottery deer areas.

Hunter Choice deer areas: The bag limit is one either-sex deer total

per year, regardless of license type. If you take a deer in a hunter choice

deer area, you cannot take another deer in another hunter choice or lot-

Deer - GENERAL

tery deer area. However, you can take deer in managed or intensive deer

areas provided you adhere to the regulations and bag limits for those

areas. Bonus permits are not valid in hunter choice deer areas.

Managed deer areas: The bag limit for managed deer areas is two

deer and hunters can use any combination of licenses and bonus permits

to tag both deer.

I have been wrong before, but that time lcornice was even wrong. smile

I'm sure it'll happen again if I keep typing responses, and I'm sure ya'll will let me know. It's all good.

Great thing about this site is with the different responses we can usually figure out a good way to clearly state the answer.

I'll be backing off of some of the regs questions for a while now. Another good thing about this site is we only have to read or respond to what we want, keeping it fun.
