Spent a lot of time out at Agassiz the last few years working. There is a decent amount of deer in the refuge but the hardest part is being able to get to them. If you have never been over there, its a huge cattail marsh with scattered areas of upland aspen, oak and willow areas. There is also a designated 2000 acre "wilderness area" that is predominately a black spruce and tamarack bog. This area is restricted to walking only with no motorized vehicles of any kind. Probably make for a VERY interesting hike out if you shot one but a memorable one too. For the rest of Agassiz NWR I would recommend setting up near on of the agriculture fields, sit in a small stand of aspen or oak savanna areas. If you are willing to work a little put on a set of waders or bring a canoe or kayak and cross a ditch and get more than 100 yards from the road (that's where most people hunt). Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I hunt up there on the 2nd weekend mostly and have seen some nice deer shot but most of them are well desereved hard work. The wolves might be there, the deer move so it just really depends what the deer population is like in some areas of the Refuge.

Bring a compass or GPS if you plan to walk a long ways and getting in the woods can be confusing. Good luck.

For those that are looking to hunt there this week/weekend: the Silo Unit is closed due to a peat bog fire. The trees in this unit are toppling over because the roots are burning up in the peat fire. Wind caused problems for fire crews this last weekend, with trees going over in the wind. Refuge manager shut down this area to all hunting until January. About 1400 acres or so, if I remember it correctly.

I used to hunt in Agassiz many years ago, probably 15 years ago. To get to our hunting grounds we had to walk between 1/2 to a mile, depending on where the beaver dam was, to cross a ditch. I shot my first deer up there and had to drag it out almost a mile. It is a very nice area. I have seen plenty of Moose up there too, which is very cool.
