Give me a brake!

Recommended Posts

1992 Chev 1/2 ton 4x4. Got everything in the back except the brake lights. Checked all the fuses, wires etc. Replaced the brake switch and still nothing. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated before I take it to the dr. Thanks!

Um, bulbs?

Did you check for power at the sockets?

If there is not power there the first thing I would do is crawl under the back and look for the rear light harness connector. Unplug it and look for corrosion.

If this has a plug and play trailer harness unplug it from the main vehicle harness and either look for corrosion or plug in the vehicle harness without the plug and play installed.

I think those may use a separate bulb for the brake and signal circuits but I'm not sure.

Some other things to look at would be to make sure the hazard switch is fully released, and check the connector for the signal switch at the bottom of the column.

I also seem to remember that some of those had a corrosion issue on the tail light circuit boards under the plastic cover on the back side of the tail light housing, so you may want to check for power at the connector if there is nothing at the socket.

Oh yeah, those are the ones with the bolt on socket assembly aren't they?

If that's the case check for power at the harness plug where it connects to the taillight assembly. If there is power there than replace the socket assembly. Your local NAPA will likely have hem in stock. They are pretty common to go bad.
