MYTH'S ABOUT DEER HUNTING

Recommended Posts

the sunday paper had an article about myth's of deer hunting. wondering what your thoughts are about them.

A well- placed heart and or lung shot will drop a deer in its tracks, or shortly there after.

The most important factor leading to the harvesting of a buck by a minnesota firearms hunter is the timing of the season to coincide with the rut.

All bucks are uniformly affected by the rut.

Weather affects deer movement, just as it affects fishing success.

Dumb luck plays a role in minnesota firearms deer hunting success.

those were the myth's given in the article. the last item about dumb luck in the "fact" section, the author says that it is true that dumb luck plays a role. well, it may pay a roll at times but in my opinion in most cases i believe the hunter spends a lot of time in preperation and planning for his or her hunt. but anyway i wonder what you guy's think about some of these "myth's". good luck.

So I assume the rest are myths???

I guess on the hear shot what do they mean by "shortly there after"? I've shot a lot of deer with heart/lung shots. I think almost all have been found within 150 yards. I would consider this shortly there after since a deer can cover this rather quickly on the run.

The second and third items are myths.

I think weather GREATLY affects NATURAL deer movement. So if you are talking gun season, in most cases we are not talking NATURAL deer movement. Deer are in most cases being pushed around by other hunters.

Dumb luck plays a role without a doubt.

I think you could change some of myths to facts but just rewording them a bit.

the way this article was written with the explanation for the myth's it could go eigther way. to me they are eigther myth's or facts and should be written that way. it seems the author in this case want's it both ways [Dennis Anderson].

as far as the well placed shots to the hear/lungs i have found over the years if the deer does not know you are there they usualy drop on the spot or a few steps. if the deer know you are there they will run somewhat further. good luck.

yeah, it was a kinda weird article. i wouldn't call any of those real myths. a myth to me is: the bigger the scrape, the bigger the buck that made it. or, dark antlers means the buck eats a lot of swamp grass. or, once a spike, always a spike. stuff like that.
