Fossil / Rock ID?

My dad found this on a walk today, sent me the picture and I have no idea what this is. He said the rock is quite heavy for it's size. I can get better/more pics if this looks to be of any interest.

Where in general was the rock found? We don't know where your Dad lives, or where this rock was collected. Minnesota? Oregon? MIssouri? The moon?

Weird. Is that a 2x6 its sitting on? Looks like something molten rock would do.

Does a magnet stick to it? Yes, I've been watching reruns of Meteorite Men. If no one here can tell you what it is maybe take it to your local college's geology dept.

Its not a fossil. You can see some banding in the sample... like toughguy said... try sticking a magnet to it..

PS: if its a meteorite... that thing is worth a small fortune

edit: Its NOT a meteorite as meteorites will not have layering or banding

You have two rocks in one in that specimen. It was formed when molten magma pushed up through the soft matrix bedrock, cracked it, squeezed into the cracks and solidified. It’s called an “Intrusion”. You can see this process quite often in granite around this area. The piece is nicely weathered and is pretty cool to look at.
