scope mount?

Mounting a scope on my Browning 270 BLR and thinking about useing see through rings so I can still use the open sites, anybody have a scope mounted this way, if so what kind of rings? I have heard mixed reviews I know you can sacrifice some longer distance accuracy having the scope raised like this, wondering how much, looking at weaver rings.

Thanks

I would personally recommend trying to shoot with regular rings and having the scope set on a low power and both eyes open to find the animal in the sights. It helps a ton! Then when you see them in the scope, you can adjust the power if you want to. See though rings in my opinion are for shooting running deer, which isn't a good idea anyways unless it's wounded or you know you can kill it clean. Plus the see though rings don't look as good if you ask me.

The only thing I've heard about see-through rings that makes sense to me is that they're supposed to be a "backup" if your scope goes to heck on you. But then why not just take it off?

Truth be told, I don't even have open sights on my deer rifle. I've never had any trouble with the scope. Now, the shooter on the other hand... grin

As was mentioned, practice looking through the scope with both eyes open. It's a good trick to have in your bag.

I used them for a couple of years in heavy cover hunting. I used them because, if you see part of a deer 30 yards away in thick stuff, it can be pretty hard to stay on the deer even with a scope on a lower power setting.

When I found myself continually ignoring the see-through in favor of the scope, even at short range, I realized they weren't working for me, and haven't gone back to them since. In the end, I realized I just didn't like my head that far above the stock when I was using the scope. I can't think of a single shot I had to pass on after I returned to standard rings.

I hunt primarily with open sights (muzzleloading) but before that used rifle with see thru mounts. Last time I shot with it was elk so close that 3x was all hair, but dropping down to open sights in the see thru mounts made a behind the ear shot simple. This was in country where long range sniping scopes where the "only way to go". Deer hunting shots in our area ranges from 8 ft to 400 yards.

They are good for close range, bad weather (heavy rain/snow), mobile hunter where scope could get bumped, back country. There is a reason why dangerous game guides use open sights.

Ultimately it depends on your style of hunting. And if you go see thru be sure to practice with open sights and the scope.

Personally I can't buy anything unless it has open sights on it, because of our style of hunting.

They are very popular here in Northwestern Ontario. They are to be used just like lakevet said. Problem is most guys look thru the scope first--with thier head up too high--and the animal is long gone before they think to look thru the open sights. Its a good idea which just doesn't work in the real world.

I used see-through scope mounts for almost 20 years. My experience was the same as Steve Foss. I never used them much as the scope was so much better. I used them twice in 20 years and could have used the scope even then. A few years ago I pitched the see-throughs for some good quality standard Leupold mounts.

My suggestion - get a good quality variable like a 2x-7x or 2.5x-8x and mount it on good quality low mounts.
