RumRiverRat
Will be part of the Mentor Hunt with the DNR based at the Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake. This is my second year doing this and I am excited, I will be mentoring a 10 or 11 year old girl. I might be putting out the most ridiculous spread ever seen on Youth Waterfowl Day. Is 2 dozen Goose Floaters, 4 Goose Feeder Butts, 12 Mallard Floaters and 6 Mallard Feeder Butts too much?.................
icecold
Taking out my two sons and the kid next door, Im more excited than they are, Lots of wood ducks around, Every one have a safe and good day.
Stringerless!
For the first time in 12 years I will not be taking a kid out. Already commmitted to helping a friend pour conrete. Feel bad about it ! The kids I have taken in previous years have all turned into great waterfowlers that are obsessed with the sport. Now they text me and make sure I have a place to go every weekend.

jparrucci
The previous poster just cemented my opinion on why the youth hunt needs to end. I saw the same thing yesterday, including 100 yard shots at birds. Take the kid and shoot some clays first. This should be a requirement of the youth hunt. HNTNBUX
I had a great day on the water with my 12 year old and 7 year old daughters. Both have been taking part in YWD for the last four years and always have a good time. My oldest ended up with three woodducks and two blue wing teal. It was a warm one out there but the flocks of teal were amazing and I have never seen so many woodducks. We will get out again many times throughout the year mixed in with fall turkey, bow hunting, firearms hunting and muzzleloading. The passion is started during the mild weather of the early season and confirmed when they sit out in ground blind when it is below zero. My kids like to hunt. Elwood I look forward to getting together with you, we will have to pick a few days and see what we can do.

Sifty
We had a tough day yesterday.I took my son and a friend of his and did'nt see the ducks like we had when we had scouted the lake.We where in the Lonsdale area and had a good num,ber of woodies and teal in the area but they seem to have found a new area to use.We saw a total of 40 ducks with shots at one group of six woodies. After last years hunt the boys where talking pretty tough but yesterday was a good thing for them to see. They had lots of questions for me on where the birds went and "there are as many ducks this year why".All in all I would say it was a good learning expericence for them.Sifty

snapcrackpop
Sorry to burst your bubble, but all shots were within shooting range, and fed one shell at a time. No sky busting that day. And they were about 50%the in the back yard at pigeons before season.
DinnerPail
[Not trying to start a war but I have seen adults that will do the same thing and worse +1 elwood, it's great that the kids get this chance and that some adults that the time to spend it with them. Glad you had a good day with you kids.

creepworm
Elwood, you are exactly right. The youth hunters cannot be blamed here. The adults that are with them and showing them to hunt are to blame. Also, when I started out hunting I do not think I connected with every shot I took and I doubt anyone here does yet. Nothing wrong with young hunters going out and having fun, even if they are not the best shooters... yet.
Scott M
The previous poster just cemented my opinion on why the youth hunt needs to end. I saw the same thing yesterday, including 100 yard shots at birds. Take the kid and shoot some clays first. This should be a requirement of the youth hunt. By that logic the regular season needs to end too. I've seen plenty of adults take bad shots and miss way more than they hit.My cousin went to the range before he came but he still struggled. But he's learning and most importantly now he's pretty excited to continue shooting and hunting in the future.
jparrucci
I am blaming the adult not the kids. We all miss shots that is part of hunting. But I've seen some pretty bad ethics now multiple times on ywd. My father wouldn't let us deer hunt until we were not only safe with a firearm, but efficient with it as well. I believe that same thinking should apply to all game.

Then please dont punish the kids by saying that the YWD should be shut down..Thats like saying that we should close all lakes to ice fishing because someone is unethical by leaving trash all over the lake.Ethics is taughtand learned by example so its up to us as ethical sportsmen to show our kids whats write and whats wrong. My son is 15yrs old and he still waited for me to say take em because he didnt want to shoot at anything out of range. There are alot of ethical hunters out there and its to bad that a select few have to give those good ones a bad name.
