Pull the HD TV from seasonal cabin for the winter?

Steve Foss

Question

Hey all:

Just got an HD TV (Sanyo) for my Dad at the family cabin. It's not a plasma TV, but it is an LCD.

Does it need to go home with someone to spend the winter in a warm house, or will the components survive unheated winter temps? It's not a big deal to take it home. Doesn't weigh much.

Thanks!

I take my TV home, but have left the computer monitor there the last couple winters.

It isn't like they ship them in heated trucks, as someone told me. Just remember to let it warm up and dry out before plugging in. Condensation bad.

Heck the manual for my Lowrance LCD says "don't freeze".

Personally I would. The dead of winter isn't where you particularily need to worry, it's the fall and spring when you have a freeze/thaw cycle. When the unit thaws out condensation build up on and in it, if it doesn't get enough time to dry out before it freezes again the expansion of the moisture turning into ice will eventually cause damage to the unit. That is how dead-spots on the screens sometimes occur. Also seeing an expensive flat panel television hanging on the wall in an unoccupied cabin is enough invitation for a thief to walk off with it.

Take it home and make use of it, otherwise tuck it in the corner of the basement.

Thanks, guys. We'll be sure to pull it for the season.

BTW, we wouldn't be leaving it on the wall anyway. It would have come down and been wrapped up and put out of sight. As far as that goes, we have opaque curtains on all the windows, so no one can see inside. They are so the sun doesn't fade the carpet, but also provide a small measure of security.
