Just thinking about it got me going so we tore into my old shack I bulit this about 4 years ago and I dont think I spent more than $30.00 on it had all of the lumber from other projects and I cheaped out and used luan plywood but the last to summers it taken a beating from all the rain.

We tore it apart and now will let it air out to dry then start the rebuild

I have a piece Aluminum from my old boat floor that I may use for the floor but not sure yet the roof will be steel.

I think my best suggestion would be to use the rubber roofing. It's kind of expensive but a roll will get 2 or 3 houses done. The thing I liked about it was how incredibly easy it went on.

I put small hooks all over under my shelves in my house. It works nice for hanging your decoys on.

I'm going to add some more shelves and "dual" controls for my decoy lines. Meaning a set of reels on the left and right wall. I have the reels on the left wall which works great until you have someone sitting in the house with you and you have to reach over them to adjust the depths.

As soon as my wheel house shell gets done i'm going to need all kinds of advice.

Just gotta repaint mine, but I feel the need to paint the inside aswell so there will be no shadows that the fish can see. Also my brother in-law n I will be making around 4 to 6 pop up darkhouses with a camo fabric he picked up from a old going outta business fabric store have tons of cloth to use plus its camo should be sweet ill post picks when we get them done. I wanna build another perm portable but heidi won't let me. guess I can only spear outta 1 at a time but still I like building them!

Elwood- I'm gonna miss seeing the brown shack I never mistaked it for anyone elses now how am I gonna know where to set up by wink

Well I decided not to use the aluminum for the floor mostly because I found a sheet of plywood that I had stored away.

I think I have enough stuff that I have from other projects that I can rebuild this house for little to no money.

this rain has got me working on the shack

I cleaned up the floor and oil base painted it for water protection then cut out the floor and screwed it down.

Its a 7x14 Ice Castle. I have had the idea of cutting a spear hole in it for a few years. This year I finally decided to do it. It only has two windows small windows, so it should be easy enough to make some kind of shutters to block out the light.

Looks good sham. I am going to build shutters in mine for the light.

The interior is going to be knotty pine or cedar. Do you guys think it would help if I took some black material and made it so it fastened to the ceiling above the hole say the width of the house and around 6 feet of the length?

I am concerned the ceiling will be to light.

Sure cant hurt MJ I know on my portable that I always noticed a bit of reflection of the ceiling so I would cover it with soeething and it was easier to see. but I your movements are kept down the fish probably wont care

A little tip for when you attach your canvas. Before you permanently staple the area where the sides meet the ends on the bottom fold the house down. Make sure it is not to tight.

The first house I built I had it to tight and had to re-do it.

ha the funny thing is they did order another piece and were gonna try and charge me for it, they said i ordered two pieces. I had to order larger piece 16.5x10 cut down to 16.5x7 piece cost me about $200. I asked for the extra 3 foot they cut off for repairs if i need it but when i went and picked it up they said they couldn't find it, I'm still waiting on a call back. Personally if i had to get more canvas i would look elsewhere the service wasn't the greatest and the guy got mad at me when i asked him to cut it down to 7 ft for me.

Figure i would post a few pics now, i did an epoxy on the bottom of the house to protect the wood from moisture and give it a tough finish, then i ended up getting a oops pail at Home Depot for $5 of a black wood stain waterproofer which turned out to be really good stuff, finally i did the same epoxy on the floor of the house and put some sand on the top layer to give it a nonskid feel. I'm not a fan of carpet so i wanted to try the epoxy out first. Last stuff i have to do is put the handles on the bottom to pick it up and canvas.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
