mrpike1973
hi i have thought about making a 4x4 house many have suggested a little bigger than that it might become to heavy for me. what are the pros and cons between permanent and portable for spearing. i do have a eskimo quick fish 2 house never speared from it but its quite dark inside. my big question is. is it worth cutting a hole for 20 minutes then just spearing for 1 or 2 hours. i can only spear in the mornings. just wondering what your thoughts are. mrklean
are you going to spear on one lake only or a number of different lakes? If just one a perm isnt a bad thing to leave out there if you like to move to different lakes a portable is nice since they are easy to set up and you can move quickly
Gordie
As A spearfisherman that has both I cant choose whic is better I have built a couple of really light perms that are lighter than most portables. To me its easier to move a perm across the ice with the right skidsPortable travels easier. If your going to stay in one spot for extended period of time as perm is the way to go If your going to hop from lake to lake portable is the way to goWhen its really really cold I think the perm retains heat better JMOIf your spearing everyday or everyother day a perm makes it easier as your hole should be still open or hardly frozen over.So If you can at all afford it a choice of both would be and is my choiceIf I could only choose one it would be a perm nothing like a perm once youve speared out of one
Archerysniper
I like using my portable, I use a frabill and it's nice and light to move around and dark inside I'm am going to make some kind of floor for it though to block out the light coming through the ice. As far as opening the hole if it's the next day normally you can pop the blocks back out with your chisel and pull them out. Here is a older post about making a floor for a quick fish and I would suggest you making one for yours it makes it a lot darker inside. Quick Fish floor
MJ1657
Everyone above has summed it up quite well. I have both and hands down like to spear out of my perm house. Its big and comfortable and has a large spear hole. That being said its not something you want to be moving around to much. The key to a perm house is to let anyone you know and trust use it. It shows activity around it which helps deter unwanted guests and it helps keep the hole open. If your'e going the portable route build a floor like Archery Sniper suggested. Lots of guys spear out of the hub houses and like them.
