is this bear big or small?

Recommended Posts

I know its hard to judge from a picture, but I thought I heard somewhere that if the ears are slanted outwards on the head usually it is a big bear, but comparing the size with some deer in other pics, the bear looks small to me, just curious. full-27112-11113-deercam459.jpg

you actually want to have the ears look small on the head for it to be a nice bear. The head is also about the same width as the bears body indicating it's a small bear as well.

I actually think 100#'s is pushing it.

Very neat picture though

to help with field judging bear we use to methods to judge. First is to have four foot logs or five foot logs. Most bears over 150 lbs are around the four foot mark. The next is to go up on a tree and make a mark 3 foot tall. So when the bear walks by you can tell if it is small or big. Looking at your picture of the ears and the tree next to it I am going to say it might be a big cub or smaller second year bear. A bears ears will not grow as it gets older, but as it gets older and grows the skull dose also. Having a bear with little ears means it head grew and is an older bear. Also get some videos and study the bear when they come into their set ups. Good luck and great picture.

Perfect info here. It's very hard to judge bears but the ears are probably the easiest way...at least you'll know more of the bears age then weight but there usually hand in hand. Throwing visuals like stated above work wonders. Look for a good belly drop too.
