Bear tags?

Recommended Posts

I just put in an email to the DNR, but thought I would ask here too. Does anyone have any more info regarding tags that may be left over after July 29th? I am sure I am not the only one wondering. But if I can get a left over tag for the area up here I will give it a whirl again this year. If I can hunt close to home I can still get some home projects done along with a little hunting.

Boy, got a response mighty quick. Must be fresh after the shutdown.

Here it is

My ?

With the July 29th deadline approaching to buy a license if a person was drawn, will this deadline stay in place because of the shutdown? Also how will us hunters that were not successful in the lottery know if the will be any leftover tags to purchase on August 3rd? Will there be information available for us hunters soon?

Thank you,

answer

The deadline has been changed to August 1 because of a law change, not the shutdown. Leftover license will become available on August 4th.

my 2nd ?

Will there be a list of left over licenses? Or do we just go to the ELS agent and try to purchase for given area?

Thanks,

answer

They will publish a list online of the areas that have any leftover licenses.

I didn't ask where the list would be published, guessing on the DNR webpage.

Just read your post and now ticked. Had the 3rd off to make sure I will be trying my darndest to pick up a tag, now they switch it to the forth and I work 6am to 6pm. Plus hardly a place to buy a tag in a half hour drive from where I work. Nice, what else is going to happen. Bad juju.

They slipped this releaase in with the news of a MIlle Lacs slot change...sneaky.

Quote:
 Bear license purchase deadline: Hunters who successfully applied in the 2011 bear license lottery must purchase their license by Aug. 1. Licenses that are not purchased will go on sale on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Thursday, Aug. 4. Bear baiting can legally begin Friday, Aug. 12.

The took away the fact guys that applied and did not draw got first chance THEN they went first come first serve. Now it goes right to forst come first serve.

I never heard that, but it is a government operation thus the rules Change as you go...question so if one is able to buy a license/tag on the 4th that comes available does that take away that persons preference points for next year?

Yhe only thing that takes away preference points is being drawn an then buyin the tag, the way i understand it. U understand it jb, it just seems the botched lotterie is still rolling down hill with wonderful surprises. Just get in line, an camp outside like i did waiting for AC/DC tickets, or was that Wham, whistle

yup its 12 noon. at least that wat the green sheet says, the one with zones an stuff, on the back side it gives details on the lotterie an stuff an qouta an non qouta. u can get them at the ELS agent lisence people place, you know. It might be worth a call cause if they change the date, they can change the time.

Found a place near that normally is a bait store that sells licsense that gets very little business. Hopefully no line. Thats all i can tell you. I wont have an advantage over anyone, just trying to beat the good run of bad luck. Although this must be a little advantage over a non-resident since you have to be at an els, right.

okay, I have a question for all you long time bear hunters. I just recieved my travel schedule and wedding notice (who gets married during the hunting season???) for September and it looks like I will only get one weekend to hunt and two in October. I would never have thought of this in the past, but since the law has changed and someone else can use the tag, Is it worth trying to keep baits fresh for a couple weekends of hunting or should I back out and try again next year? I hate to cheat some guy out of quality time in the field (Unit 51) if I am not able to put a full effort in.

Well here are the regs for the left overs right from the DNR web. I am not so dazed and confused anymore. Me keeping my fingers crossed!!!!!!!

LICENSE TYPES, ELIGIBILITY, AND COSTS

New for 2011: Bear lottery winners must purchase their license by August 1, 2011. Unsold and

any surplus licenses will then become available for one week to those that applied but were not

selected in the lottery starting August 4, 2011 at 12:00PM. August 10, 2011 at 12:00PM any remaining

unsold license will become available to anyone. A list of available licenses will be posted

online on August 3, 2011.

Knowsnothing, When you say that someone else can use your tag because of a new license. Are you talking about someone else physically using the tag that you bought or that because of the new law that if you don't buy your tag and hunt that then someone else can buy the tag that you did not after August 4th?

Now, like Remington said if you can hunt the 1st weekend go for it. Also, it does get tougher later in the season with the bird hunters and bow hunters, but as I found out last fall some of the real big boys show up in October. Makes it more of a challenge that way. Not that I closed the deal, but I gave it a good whirl. Now if you were in area 12 I would say just skip it grin.
