CAT'S INCREDIBLE 2011 --- CANCELLED

What a bummer... I was starting to anticipate this, particularly with the rain that hit Fargo last night. Major, major bummer but definitely the right call.

Now I hope all of us that made it in this year are guaranteed entry next year.

You know I hate to have an opinion on the contrary... but I don't believe it was the right call. There's a thing called flood stage, and it wasn't even predicted to be there. To me, that means 'fish on'.

Was it a bunch of old-timers who don't like fishing high water who complained enough, and that made the committee decide that it was too "dangerous". It's not even at flood level yet, and it's supposed to drop more throughout the weekend. Furthermore, one can't necessarily predict how fast it'll drop....a week and a half out it might be off by several feet at least.

Hmmm, not sure where Carver is and not sure how familiar you are with the Red but Fargo just crested well above flood stage, the water is still rising at Halstad and the Red flows N. There is a big push of water coming from the south toward Gfks and the southern tribs are all full to the brim as well. So it'll be awhile before it crests at Gfks. It's near 24 foot in Gfks now and rising rapidly, flood stage is 28 foot and I'd bet it'll reach near flood stage by the weekend. It most certainly won't "drop more throughout the weekend" as it's been rising for the past 2-3 days with more to come! Hopefully maybe by early/mid next week barring any more gully washers she may crest. I sure hope so because I start my Red river trips the second week in August.

I'm no hydrologist but all you'd have to do is check our usgs site to figure this out eh. Getting a boat launched and then off on those Gfks ramps is a whole different animal also when the water is up and hauling, let alone 150 of them!

No it was'nt old timer fuddy duddies making this call it was folks who actually know what the Red river is like and the dangers high and fast water can create for fishers with vast river expierience as well as those with little Red river time under their belts.

Kerry I think you made the right call man. Shame such a big event has to be cancelled but Mother nature is a kickin the valley hard this year for sure.

I agree with your point except the park/boat ramp in East Grand Forks where the tournament was to be held would become flooded somewhere around 26 feet and the boat ramp closes at 24 feet ish. It was more of a location issue than a fishing issue. Even if the water came up and went down the tournament headquarters if it could be set up would have been a mess and the ramp still closed.

Okay excuse me please, thought you were talking this weekend as I was reading your post and not whatever paper you were reading. Why would he consult me I'm a simple fisherman.

Did'nt know fishing near floodstage was the norm for the last decade either. Thanks for the enlightenment. I have'nt done the Cats incredible since '97 btw, the year of that big flood.

Sorry and I'll be sure to stay out of the Catfish forum once again.
