Your point #3 about weeds is a good one. My first 10 lber came off Gull fishing a weed edge with a crank bait while bass fishing. Since a light bulb went on and we now pull nice walleyes during middle of the day, mid-summer.

If you want more solid open water trolling info, write "Toad" from the Brainerd forum.

I had the opportunity to experience this first hand with him last SUmmer! All I can say is WOW!

The window for catching I noticed is pretty small, but the fish made up for it.

We worked this technique in June! Real cool watching the tullees flop and plop just above the surface!

Early Spring on any river that holds good numbers and sizes of walleye would be my first option for a large walleye!

If you click on the walleye page/link on the options(on the front page) you can see me holding a Pool 4 beaut caught April 11th last year in 2 feet of water! It was one of two fish I caught in 4 hours of fishing that afternoon/evening!

Keep the rods bendin'!!!

It aint the greatest but the biggest I've cought is a 21 incher. I was in a resort harbor on Mille Lacs just before the Mayfly hatch. using a leech. maybe 3 ft of water. My guess is he 0r she was planning on a dinner of bait fish feeding on the hatch.
If I'm off the mark on that let me know. Also is that time prior to and during the Mayfly hatch a good time to shallow up in the hunt for Walleyes?
