Someone care to help a total newbie on walleye?

Looking for some help/advice/guidance.
I'm totally new to walleyes. Have never fished for them. I am an experienced fisherman tho. Spend my time on the Texas gulf coast. Have an invite to go "up north" and try walleye and pike.
Would any of you folks care to recommend any websites, books, articles? Or just chew the fat with me about this?
Fiqure I've got the rod&reel end covered but need to know about terminal tackle and techniques.
Thanks for looking.

Okay I'm stumped. What is an "In-fisherman" book?
I beleive we'll be fishing from small boats in a lake. Able to move around at will.
No idea of water/currnet conditions or bottom structure or depths. I'd imagine from bank to 30'.
Also the guys who have been there say they use live "minnows".
Time frame will be June next year.
What's the best thing to look for in botoom structure? Weed? Downed trees/brush? Rock?
That's all I know at this point.

  • we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators

The walleye anglers here in the walleye forum are usually pretty knowledgable too.

Maybe one of them will be able to help you.

Babe Winkleman's Walleye Patterns is a great tool for someone looking to learn more about walleye.

In-Fisherman has some good stuff too.

This walleye forum here has many topics ranging from presentantions, to seasonal tactics, to which waters hold walleye, etc.

Moonpie, for the best up to date info, you need look no wheres else but here. Try and get some specifics. Talk to the people that are planning the outing. At least find out the body of water you'll be fishing. I see the time frame is June, a great time for fishing! Fish will be comeing off the spawn and in the early summer feeding mood. With cooler waters, fish will be found in shallower water. Makeing for easier fishing. Current is also a fish magnet. Weeds are just starting to grow at this time of year, not being much of a factor. After you know where you'll be fishing, monitor and post in that regional forum, as well as this one. Fishing walleye is similar to sea trout, jigs and live bait works well. And northerns match up to your barraccuda......just a little more slimey! shocked.gif

Hey moonpie, wlecome to the site. I think we might be able to help you out.

Had a guide from the gulf come up last year and had a blast fishing walleye and pike here.

Let us know where you are going to be and I can give more precise info. As far as the time frame, you're coming at the best time of the year for walleye!!!

And if you're staying at Pimushe maybe we even have closer connection than you think.

My favorite tactic is the simple Lindy rig type set up. Many variables can be made from these rigs.

On the basic, the Lindy rig is a slip sinker and snell set up. On the line from your reel, slide on an egg type sinker. Then tie on a amall snap swivel, then a leader with a hook tipped with a minnow.

Drift troll with the wind/current, letting the sinker tap along the bottom. "Feel" your way across the bottom so you don't get hung up.

Variables are, heavier slip sinkers to the slip bottom bouncer, length of leaders, 3' to 6' or more, crawler harness, or spinners, leeches, minnows, or crawlers.
