NW Angle question.

Recommended Posts

We are driving up to the angle and staying at Young's Bay July 11-16 looking for skies. There will be 6 of us and not one of us have been to the angle before or even fished skies in shield type water. So basically I'm looking for any help people are willing to share... it will help A LOT and be very much appreciated. Feel free to email or PM me any helpful information as well.

My main question though is where to get licenses. The other 5 guys will all need to buy a license for the trip. We need Ontario licenses and we will never be on land in Ontario so how do they get fishing licenses?

You can buy Ontario licenses at the Shell station by Sprague.

First time for 'skies on LOTW? Prepare to be overwhelmed. Every point, every reef, EVERYTHING looks like it will hold fish (and I suspect at some time or another, they do.)

A mapping GPS is essential IMHO. Lots and lots and lots of lower unit hungry rock reefs live out there. Every island manages to look like another and on a cloudy/misty/rainy day, navigation can become a problem w/o a GPS and/or maps.

It's a big lake and a wonderful, wonderful place to visit.

Anybody have any advice on what's working up there these days. I will also be in the angle around the same time frame. First time back in 10 years. I've got plenty of spots just wondering if anybody had any favorite colors or baits. I know some of my friends have always like black and orange blades, suicks and top raiders. All 3 will be on a rod for me.

You might wanna pick up a map if you havnt done so. Thornes got them for $19. Make sure you get the right location.

Quick, get "Muskies on the Shield", by Richard Pearson. Reading that in the next couple weeks will help you more than anything I can think of... Seriously!

Or fish in the boat with him. What an experience!!! But Scoot is right, his book will help you understand the composition of the lake, how to look for fish holding spot (SADDLES, SADDLES, SADDLES.....did I mention SADDLES?).

Last year for us the three colors that work the best were: Nickel over blue, chartruese over black and gold over white. I caught a 49.5 on a baby cowgirl burned fast over weeds like Tim said. Can't go wrong with a 10 inch suick either. This time of the year I would start in the weeds and look for the weed/rock combinations. Don't think you are ever too close to shore either. Bounce those lures off the shore and start them back to the boat. Be surprised at the fish you will pull out of just a couple feet of water.
