Calcutta Trouble

My calcutta has been giving me problems lately. Ive fished with it for less than a year and no matter how much I tighten the drag,you can still easily pull line out. What the heck should i do? Its pi$$ing me off

Send it to a Shimano repair center. I send mine to the one in Missouri. I think its called Outdoor World. You can find it on the Shimano HSOforum or in the owners manual. I send mine in every other year and they go through them and replace any worn out gears and drag. Yours should still be under warranty. May cost a few bucks for shipping. Worth it compared to the cost of a new reel.

Assuming you have mono backing on the reel?? See if it's the line slipping on the spool or if the spool turns when you pull on the line....

If only one year old your drag washers shouldn't be "worn out" to the point you need new ones, though Carbontex washers are good replacements. Assuming the line is not slipping on the spool (and just having mono backing doesn't ensure this) I'm guessing it's your spring washers. Contact me if you like and I'll take a look at it for nothing. Sounds like your drag washer may be greasy or dirty allowing your reel to slip.

That or your "star" isn't being allowed to tighten down enough to put enough pressure on your drag washer.

Or maybe the drags needs fresh grease. Don't forget to just simply back off the drag for periods of nonuse. It makes a world of difference.

I am guessing that is the problem, you should try to get to the muskie expo or Thorne bros to learn how to take down and clean your reel.

Do NOT grease the drag! This will make it slip. Take the real apart, spray the drag discs with carb cleaner and reassemble. Problem solved most likely.

Thats funny the tech that does these reels at the seminar told me to grease mine. I did and it does not slip

There are particular greases for drag washers, but they should not be greased with "regular" grease.

Drags on a Calcutta are not greased from the factory. They are designed to be dry. Usually they get grease or oil on them with use from the other moving parts in the reel and often will slip easy due to that.

Drying them off will make them perform as they were intended to.

You can and should use grease on the fiber drag washers, but only very sparingly and only the right stuff. Cal's drag grease or Shimano drag grease. Just barely a film, enough to leave a fingerprint.
