Baiting when you live 3 hours away

Recommended Posts

For those who do not live close to their hunting Zone what do you do that was successful. The best way to bait in my opinion is to but enough for 1 bear every night. That is not possible when you live 3 hours away.

I bait every couple days, but I'm only 50 miles from my sites. Check with the local's at the pubs, maybe someone is close by that can bait for you. If you only bait every weekend, bait a little heavy until the week of hunting, then go back to smaller amounts. Make sure you have something hanging high that they can't get to that has a good smell that lasts. I have gone weekly and still had good results. Use alot of GREASE at bait site so it soaks in the wood and ground to give them something to dig for. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I hunt five hours away so I'm in the same boat as you, DRH. I use a ton of bait while I'm there, making sure that I leave enough for them to keep getting fat until I get back. Not sure if this is the best way but it's worked for me in the past. I only use one bait station. If you have someone else bait for you, I believe they need to be licensed or registered.

Like Motley said, try leaving something strong smelling that they can't get to.

Even if I lived close I would only bait every other day or two I do really well with my stations and I bait every other day or every few I use a lot 6-8 5 gallon pails per time of a variety plus bucket of grease.

Good luck...

One thing you could do, is make 2-3 cribs really really heavy an tight an large. Fill them full of bait, an lay down gallons of grease. If the smell an grease will get bear in an the heavynes of the cribs will keep out lesser bear, but still keep them interested in coming back to try an get the moresels, if they get one open there is still 1 or 2 left an ther should be bait around til you can get back to back to refill. I was gonna do this last year as I was gonna go an hr 1 way but just couldnt swing it. Boar

That idea came from Johnny P. Or bog cant remeber. Been thinking about it all day, my wife always seems to make a vacation plans for 2-4 days just before school starts so having spare crib full of goodies if I get called away, might eleviate some angziety/anxiety?.....stress. boar

Red, you only need a guide lic if your being compinsated in any way shape or form. What I see most guys do that live a distance away is they put a ton of bait in the crib then come back in a week and do it again then start baiting daily or every other. This is just making them nocturnal because of the amount of food there is to eat, they don't have to worry about the food being gone and can come in later. It's also causing the bear to have to go look for food when bait goes empty. Most of the reason a bear is hitting the bait every three to four days. If you have buddies I would split up the week and travel up to bait Tuesday Thursday Saturday. Then when you get there to hunt the bear is used to you coming in and getting a belly full. If alone, minimum I would bait Saturday Wednesday and Saturday first week then take three days before the season off work and bait everyday or every other.
