I know this is a broad question and anything but definite as far as the answer goes .... what's my chance of finding a state forest site in the 3 hour drive range. I would be leaving the SW metro at 4 pm.

If it is a bigger site you can call to try to reserve a space or see what is available. The DNR has an online reservation system. Some have overflow camping as well.

Dispersed camping is allowed in the State Forests, as long as they are not designated as day use areas. Check out the DNR HSOforum. This will give those willing to go without toilets, firepits and picnic tables a good chance of finding a place to camp.

I could be wrong, but since most schools are still in session after Memorial Day, I really do not think the State forests are going to be over run yet, especially since they are not as RV friendly. Would go online and see if you can reserve any state park sites in the area you might want to go. They will fill up sooner and might be a good gage to see the demand this weekend.
