Broken Thermostat

Hey guys I could really use some help...I had a graduation party last night at my house last night and as always it got a little rowdy after a few cocktails. Anyway, long story short one of my buddies decided it would be funny to punch my old school thermostat...don't ask me why...but he ended up shattering it. I think I found most of the parts taht came flying off but I have no idea how to put it back together or where to get replacemnt parts...do any of you know where I could find parts to something like this? would any ordinary hardware store carry parts you think? I just want to fix it before my dad finds out ...

Your missing the clear dome that goes over the round dial and the dial sets into the round clear ring.

Then the round bevel goes on last.

Oh man, that cracks me up.

Reminds me of a party one winter, circa 1983, when a drunk classmate teetered backward into a glass front gun cabinet. Glass and a fair amount of blood everywhere. It had wildlife etchings on it too, so it was not like the glass could be replaced with a standard sheet. Poor girl had some 'splaining to do when her folks came home the next day. I still give her mom the needle about from time to time.

Thats just a standard honeywell thermostat (T87?) head on over to the hardware store or your local home improvement store and pick one up. pretty sure they should still carry the "old reliable". otherwise a know i have a couple laying around somewher in the basement

should be two or three screws holding it to the wall, then just match up the wires

That is the ol' 2 wire heat only T87...shows it in the left hand corner. Head to the big box stores..they all have 'em. Most used T-stat in the industry. (Was) Don't pay more than $35 for it. Make sure you get the right one...the other is for AC also, and costs more, it's the CT87N. They look almost identical. Easy to change. Just make sure the anticipator 9that little scale with the pointer) is set at the same voltage.

Get a new one and be sure to dispose of the old one correctly. NOT IN THE GARBAGE!!!!

Also, those old style ones need to be leveled correctly for them to work right. Don't just slap the new up and call it good.

Best advice, tell your parents, cuz they will find out eventually. It may just give them a reason to upgrade to a better, programmable electronic thermostat.

Yeeeea I know... go figure I live in the house for 3 years and nothing happens, then the first day I'm out of college stuff starts to break! Thanks for all the help guys! I'll go pick one up tomorrow...where do you disspose of the old one?

Your county should have a recycle place that will accept hazardous waste.

Good opportunity to upgrade to a programmable thermostat, then write it off as a tax deduction as a energy saver. If you have a re-use building center in the area you may find a used one cheap.

Then build a drunk proof cage around it before your next party.

don't tell your dad that you got drunk and your buddy got drunk and broke it. Just tell them that, being the good son that you are, you took it upon yourself to upgrade to a programmable thermostat to save them on energy costs.

be careful with that old one. That glass tube is filled with mercury. like others have said, you have to bring it to a place that accepts hazardous waste.
