Fishing Sunglasses

Recommended Posts

I used to be a cheapie guy, got 1-2 pairs a year due to scratching and falling apart. About 5 years ago got a pair of H3O's and after years of abuse still going strong and unscratched. Did have to have the nose pieces replaced last year, to my surprise still covered under warrenty, they sent me a new set within a few days. Best $109 I have spent and in the long run has saved me money over buying a couple $20 pairs a year.

You guys that can't tell the difference between cheap and quality sunglasses must already have messed up vision.

Amen to that suncruiser234!!! FYI on the Oakleys and the lenses in their glasses...... THEY ARE NOT ALL POLARIZED!!! Oakley offers many versions of sun lenses with the rainbow of mirror colors but you must specify polarized lenses and pay the up charge. So it is safe to say that even the cheapest polarized wally world sunglasses will allow you to see through the water better than some of the most expensive Oakleys. Oh yeah and by the way since I am in the business Kaenon and Costa Del Mar are the only two manufacturers that I will wear, with Kaenon being the first choice with the SR91 lenses 100% polarized, light weight Trivex type material and virtually distortion free. The Costa's are second choice due to the fact that they are polarized glass lenses very resist scratches but are also twice as heavy as the Kaenons.

Costa has glasses with bifocals built into them. Got my father a pair of them a few years ago for musky fishing. He was skeptical at first. Thinking that the bifocal section would get in the way of seeing figure 8s since your looking down, but he became a believer after the first time. Stating that it didn't take long at all to get used to bifocals in the sunglasses.

I am on my second pair of Costa's in the last 6 years and wont wear anything else, people will say the 15$ ones are just ast good and maybe they're right. I did a little survey around work one Monday after a sunny weekend on the lake, just asked the guys with Raccoon eyes which shades they wear and the guys that don't which ones they do and you'll fiquire out in a hurry which shades you want protecting your eyes. You dang right they are expensive but what is your vision worth?

I appreciate everyone's feedback...I ended up expanding my budget and getting a pair of Costas today. The Fathom with 580p lenses in amber. Heck they come with a free tumbler and a 1yr subscription to F&S mag. I tried on several $25-$40 pairs yesterday and I'm sure I'll be happy with my purchase. Now we just need some sunshine for the MN opener this weekend.

Maui Jim, Native or Costa

You get what you pay for. I have a set of each in prescription. All are polarized and each of them has a different lense color. Out of the three the Maui's are the best IMO.

I had a nice pair of bolle that lasted for years. when they broke I started buying cheapies and I always lose and or break them. Currently looking for a good pair again that I will take better care of.

My wife is an optician. She tells me that the biggest difference is the UV protection. She claims that the cheapies use spray-on UV protectant that eventually wears away. Because your eyes are shaded, your pupils are dilated, so once the UV protectant has worn off, your eyes subject to worse damage than they would be w/o sunglasses. That said, I have high-end polarized lenses and $10 Berkley polarized glasses and the difference in reducing glare is pretty minor in my opinion.
