Tip of the week.

Recommended Posts

I'm going to start a tip of the week thread for us walleye guys that will be open for all of us to share our tips. I'm thinking Mondays will be a good day to start. Feel free to share any fishing or tackle related tips.

I will take May 2 and June 13. Who else is in or is this a bad idea?

1st tip for opener is make sure everything on the boat is working BEFORE you hit the ramp. Then its make sure all equipment is working and you have good fresh minnows. Have a good opener everyone and help eachother at the ramps.

Going off of what Northlander said. I always bring the boat out with all the equipment before the openers. I act like i'm setting up on a spot (just in a bay) and then I make sure I have everything. Then I go [PoorWordUsage] I forgot this and forgot that and put it on a list and in the boat when I get home to make sure I have everything.

Then its make sure ....... you have good fresh minnows.

I've already got all my minnows for opener and they all look, smell and feel like plastic smile

I'll probably get a few fresh and lively minnows that morning, but usually I am able to get by with plastics on shallow water walleyes on the opener. Hopefully it will work this year too!

I'm hoping the weather is good Saturday I'm going to take the boat out for a trial run and make sure everything works and if I forgot something I'll get in the boat. I usually don't get to worked up for the opener of fishing because it's a long season plenty of time to fish. I'll probably be out on the afternoon of the opener unless the weather is like it is today.

Ya I will use plastics too but something about jiggin with minnows from my local baitshops makes me feel good.

your local bait shop prob makes a better margin on plastics. just something to think about.

I guess you guys arent getting my intent. The intent is to post 1 tip a week (hence the "tip of the week" title), with each of us taking a different week, that giving us time to discuss it before the next tip.

My tip of the week is on tackle storage, mainly lindy, spinners and slow death rigs. Most of you probably already know this but manybe not.

I use a cheap swimming foam noodle that you can pick up anywhere for a couple of bucks, cut it to the length to fit in a Plano 3731 tray (this one has no compartment dividers, it's one deep compartment), cut some slots to hold the line and them wrap them up. It keeps things organized and need. I use different colored noodles for different things, red for slow death, blue for spinners and yellow for lindy rigs.

Easy, need, cheap and clean.

Great tip, mnfishinguy. I think I might've read an earlier post of yours describing the same thing because I went out and bought the noodles and used them to store my rigs. I know I read it on this forum, so I'll give you credit. smile

On some I've got a cheap size 18 barrel swivel (I like those since my eyes can pick the hole out easier with my sunglasses on) the others just have a double loop knot, nothing special. The slow death hooks are tied on with a quick snell knot, again nothing special but highly effective.

I like the tubes because I can have one full of SD rigs, one full of spinners and one full of Lindy rigs in one plano box in the boat and still have more in back at the truck/cabin if needed on a multi day trip without having to have it all in the boat.

just for the record live bait is 100% profit i believe

terminal tackle is secound most profitable

It depends on the bait shop. Some baitshops have cheaper bait because they make enough to get by and not pay employees because they have none. other jack up bait prices to make money to pay employees. All depends where you go.

for this to be true, it would mean the bait shops are getting all of their bait for free, which is simply just not true. the amount of profit made on live bait depends more on who they get their bait from (wholesaler or someone who buys from the wholesaler)
