Oil Change on Polaris

This may have been covered in the past but it's that time of the year for me. I have a 2002 sportsman 500 and am wondering if I can just cross reference the oil filter at an auto store and use a more general oil. This may be a dumb question, but my polaris dealer picked up and moved on me.

I just use the Polaris stuff and much as I hate paying for it.

With that said, I know of others that use different brands. The main thing to make sure of is not vary to far from the weight of the polaris oil whis is 0-40.

I would suggest 0-40 amsoil and mobil1 both make a 0-40 castrol makes a 5-50. I know of guys that have used all 3 and it seemed to work fine. I have seen of others that use nothing but 10/40 Mobil. The whole issue is to keep clean oil in it

As for filters I know that a mobil 1 m1 108 high efficiency high capacity oil filter will fit. The filter is the same size as the stock polaris filter and fits perfect. Fram calls for a PH6017A I believe. I dont think it would do as good of job as the mobil 1 though but would probably still work.

From what I have found at Fleet Farm after you buy the good 0w-40 oil at 7 to 8 bucks a qt and the 10 to 12 buck oil filter. Your just as well off going to Polaris and buying the oil change kit they have. BTW I too have a 2002 Sportsman 500.

I just looked it up on the Fram Filter HSOforum.

02 Sportsman 500 takes a PH6017A You can get them a fleet farm, but there not much cheaper than going through Polaris, maybe 50 cents if I recall. I'm sure Fram makes the filters for Polaris as does Amsoil make the oil for popos. I've ran 0-40 Mobil 1 in my Polaris's seems to work and is cheaper. I've also played around with oil filters by just going to wal-mart and matching up the filter from the polaris with a filter in the store, its a little longer but works. I don't remember the number, it was some motorcycle filter.

I bought a "oil change kit" for my 2008 Sportsman 500 from a dealer and it was $28.00 plus tax, included a filter and 2 quarts of oil. I have found that the dealer that I was buying from in the larger city was higher priced than this one that I found in a smaller town, the other dealer charged me $40 plus tax for the same thing. So in short, I know where I will be buying all my oil from now on, I will also be going to him for any work that I need done too, he is much more willing to help a person out than the guys at the dealership in the larger city. He told me that I should be changeing it every 300 miles or so, of course this all depends on how you ride it. If you are riding in a lot of slop or water and really pounding the heck out of it, you should probably change it more often.

He is going to make up for the cheap oil by selling you twice as much. 300 miles seems pretty often unless you are doing a lot of mudding and water riding. For trail riding you can go a lot longer than that. Mine is mostly trail ridden and I change once a year every spring.

Actually it was the guy that was charging me more for the oil that told me every 300 miles. I never asked the guy that charges less, guess maybe I should ask him too, I trust him and know he wont screw me over.

If you are only putting 300-400 miles you are fine changing once a year. I think the manual says something like 500 miles, but 500 miles on an ATV be a lot or hardly any depending on how it is driven.

50 hours then every 150. Polaris also reccomends now to NOT drain the sump on the engine. The polaris oil change kit comes with a filter and two quarts or oil. Simply pull the drain plug on the external (from the engine) oil tank, spin the filter off and replace the oil with the two quarts provided in the kit and your done! If your drain the sump pan on the engine you risk loosing the prime on the oil pump and there is not enough oil left in there to warrant having to get it out.

I change mine every 50 hours on both the wheeler and the ranger. I wouldn't go to 150 hours. I just sold my ranger it had 3000 miles and only 170 hours, in my opinion 150 hours is way too long. We change oil in our tractors and combines at 100 hours, and atv/utvs run in much more severe conditions.

Only reason I see Polaris not recommending not dropping the sump oil is because people would need more than 2 qts to fill it up (most just dump in the 2 qts and go) and besides it is a royal pain. That being said I'd still drop the sump oil.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
