Single Tail vs Double Tail Grubs

Craigums

Recommended Posts

I've had some exciting days fishing throwing a jig/twintail grub tipped with a minnow. I've also had some very slow days doing it as well.

Seems like a walleye rig!! smile

Double tail 98% on jigs unless i'm fishing suspended fish that are chasing bait fish then I will go to a single.

Hiya -

In a nutshell - what Cecil said. I use double tails as jig trailers or occasionally on a ball head or mushroom head when fishing a weedline where I want a really slow fall. For swimming a grub, I use single tails.

cheers,

If im in dirty water I will switch to either a darker color (black/blue, black) or switch to a crank or spinnerbait. I dont think a double tail gives off THAT much more vibration considering they are usually smaller tails than a single tail grub.

Hiya -

I agree on the dark color in darker water, and would add that if I want more sound, I'd likely change to a paddle tail grub like a Swing Impact, Skinny Dipper, or something like that. I don't, however, have tons of experience fishing dirty water with grubs so that's theory not experience talking - your mileage may vary wink.

Swimming grubs are a clear water deal for me, and in that situation I don't *want* fish to have an easy time finding the bait. I like translucent colors and a more subtle buzz of a single tail...

Fish have an uncanny ability to find food in dark water. I prefer black. I really don't think you need to add much thump for fish to find it. And any bottom contact will trump any vibration that a plastic could give off.
