Anyone Watch the Alaskan Crab special on Discovery?

All I can say is wow! I've heard a lot about how dangerous of a job it is but after watching this I will have a lot more respect for the guys who supply my AYCE crab dinner.

Excellent program!I was really amazed at how much water them boats take over the side.Must be a pretty big bildge pump.Man them guys work hard.20 hour shifts I think they said.Must be pretty scary with a fire on board.And how about that ice they had to bust off.

It's a good job if you can get it. That was a great special. I'd like to see it again.

I've seen guys on ocean charter fishing boats blowing out their guts before we've lost sight of shore. I couldn't imagine two weeks of those massive rollers not to mention the freezing temps.

Yeah, they said the death rate is about 1 guy per season. Somtimes more. I noticed some stats online about 13 guys died in 96' considering it's generally a 5-7 day season that is about 2 people/ day. Yuck! Also when I was in Alaska this summer I was talking to our charter captain and he was saying his friends work on a boat. There are still a bunch of guys who get mangled on the boats but not killed. I guess that would happen when an 800lb crab pot falls on your leg. Amazing stuff. That and the numbers of crab that they harvest......rather sad actually. 17million pounds of King crab harvested in 5 days.........and what about 90% of that is shipped straight to Japan. Hmmmmmm

It was a very well done and interesting show. Two things I learned - 1) I can see why wild Alaskan crab costs so much at the store and 2) three - four foot waves on Mille Lacs don't scare me as much anymore . . .

Yeah I caught the 1st 2 episodes. I had to go to sleep after the King Crabs one. There was another one after that but I didn't have time to see it.

It's quite an adventure to work in the Alaskan fishing industry. If you want adventure(and a little traveling $$), I highly recommend it.

The crab fishing isn't as lucrative as it was in the late 70's to mid 80's, but you can still make some money. Another option is salmon fishing.

Yes, it is dangerous. I was almost killed 2x while I was out at sea. God was watching over me and I'm more than thankful.

It's pretty cool to wake up(after 2hrs sleep) and see orca breaching next to the boat. Also, I caught my first Halibut during a break in work one afternoon. I just dropped a line over the side. Kinda cool considering all the money people pay to get up there and charter a boat/guide.

Seasickness? I threw-up for 24 hours straight my first day on the boat. That part stunk.

The wife of one of my current students was a commercial fisherman (fisherperson?) in Alaska. He has a picture of her in her wet weather gear with a 92 pound king salmon, caught in a net. Awesome fish. Tough chick.
