BLACKJACK
Was talking to an ATV dealer yesterday about whats best, tracks or chains, and costs. He said that good tracks would add another $4000 to the cost of an ATV!!! Does that sound about right to you guys?
jwmiller33
I know it is $5-10k to get tracks on a truck depending on where you get the tracks and who puts them on, so $4k for a quad sounds about right. I'm not expert by any means, just throwing out my opinion

Bjjams
[NOTE FROM ADMIN: Your post has been edited. Please read forum policy before posting again. jwmiller33
If you find them used, you still have to factor in installation, which is still a good chunk of change.
DangrsDaveO
I have an Outlander 400 that I use for ice fishing primarily. I have only been stuck once. Since then I have been thinking tracks. Well then I went to the Sportsmen Show in Fargo this last weekend and saw an alternative to tracks. They are called JWheelz. A little late for me in the season to purchase them but I plan on getting them this fall. It looks like the pricing starts at $590.00. Check out their HSOforum they have some great videos. Don't get me wrong I think tracks are great but I have two kids in braces and a new driver in the family, funds are a little short. The alternative to tracks are a hub style bolt on. The attach direct to your ATV/UTV tires increasing the surface area. Very clever idea.

Report back on how they work for you!!
pureinsanity
One thing I noticed about them in several videos is you never saw one starting from a dead stop in muck. They are always going full bore with forward memento. You get a good enough run at it you can probably make it through several areas as long as you don't let off the throttle or have the frame bottom out. Even with those wheels I bet you could bottom out. I bet you could get the same results with wider tires, or less air pressure in your tires. snow is a little different than sand but in the sand dunes if we would get stuck with our trucks and trailers we would drop the tire pressure down real low and the truck would drive right out of whatever it was stuck in. So I guess what I am saying is if you have the money go with tracks. If money is tight, I would just lower tire pressure on my tires so they have a wider surface area of grip and go for it. if you want the same results as the J wheels figure out a way to make your quad and 8 x 8... plus with more tires if your quad went through the ice it might float

creepworm
Had a set of J-wheels on one of the quads for soil sampling this last spring. I thought they worked quite well. Not as good as tracks but kept you from sinking into the mud. I did stop in the middle of a mud hole in a field just to test them out and did not get stuck. One thing with the J-wheels is that they tire the arms out in a hurry. Every clump of dirt hits the J-wheel and rips the handle bars in that direction. If you are thinking of riding all day with these you better have good upper body strength. iffwalleyes
If you find them used, you still have to factor in installation, which is still a good chunk of change. Right typical mounting Kit is $500 for most. But if your luck out and find used one for your model you can save there too. But it is something to make sure it comes with. There some guys doing just that in the mid to late 90's with their quads. I remember a guy inventing a mounting kit for his sportsman and he made a promo video of him driving around his bass pond with it.

Macgyver55
Quote: figure out a way to make your quad and 8 x 8... plus with more tires if your quad went through the ice it might float Been there, done that years ago! It works and yeah, it floats easily, but too cumbersome to use for anything quickly, but probably fine for just "on ice" use.

GRA
Re Tracks--Is there more than one brand? PurpleFloyd
Has anyone come across this brand? They are called giant ATV tracks but only found them on the site of one reseller. They look pretty interesting but I wonder how easily they get clogged up.
