Best Replacement Trebles For Crankbaits?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on the best treble hooks to replace old beat up ones on shad raps, minnow raps, and tail dancers. I've heard some good things about Triple Grip and Sure Set trebles and was thinking about using the former for the front hooks and the later on the back end.....but then my checkbook realized I could put the original short shank VMC's on for less than half the price.

Do you guys think triple grips and sure sets hook and hold more fish than standard Rapala trebles?

Any other recommendations? I use braided lines almost exclusively so staying buttoned up can be an issue once in a while.

For some of my cranks I like to use Diachi hooks. They are little more spendy though. I also put quite a few feathered trebles on the backs of my lures. I have put some Triple Grips on but normally use Mustad's. I keep a good assortment in my boat all the time and swap them out if they are bent or missing hooks.

Ive been replacing my stock trebles with triple grips for the last 8 years.I use mostly the bronze triples, they tend to bend up a little but do not let go of their grip on a fish. There are alot of good quality hooks on the market to choose from,go stick yerself with a few and see what you like best smile.Catching the fish of a lifetime far out weighs cost of a good hook IMO.

mustad triple grips are the way to go. stared useing them for bass and i havent had one come off yet. last year i put them on my shad raps for trolling eyes and my hook up ratio went threw the roof. There wirth the money

Defineatly buy the mustad trebles. I just bought some the other day and for 5 trebles, i paid $3 at my local bait shop. Plus, they are the strongest, most durable on the market right now.

Depends on what size the crankbaits are.On shadraps, a number 7 I use number 6 triples.Numer 4,s do the job for most cranks such as #9 shadraps, larger taildancers,12-14 huskyjerks etc.Ive used size 2 on the floating rap #18.Triples come in reg, short and extra short shank,so I may stick an xtra short shank on the front and a longer shank on the back of a lure.Hate it when you get a treble hook hung up on the lip of your lure .Triple grips come in #8 #6 #4 #2 as far as I know.8,s are smallest and 2,are largest in case yer wondering.Wish they made a #10 and #1

I used to be 100% Triple Grips and I still really like them, but I really don't worry about it too much any more.

I replace trebles on my crankbaits a lot and I honestly can't tell a difference in any of them. I like wide gap trebles, and I usually go 1 size larger than was originally on the crank, as long as it still runs good. Red or bronze for me.

And like croixeyes pointed out, I'll use a shorter shank on the front and middle hooks, and a longer shank on the back hooks.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
