Mono for backing, yes. Diameter doesn't matter. I'll just use whatever old line I might have. You can check the clearance bins for cheap mono too. I picked up several 300 yd spools of 8# to 10# mono a few years back for 97 cents each just to use for backing.

Keeps the braid from slipping on the spool and lets you fill the reel with cheap line and only having to add 150 yards or so of braid allowing you to spool 2 reels. At $30 and up for 300 yard spools, filling several muskie reels tends to get expensive.

I may be cheap but besides keeping the braid from slipping the mono backing is a good way to get two reels filled with one 300 yard spool. I also use a cheap clip on line counter as I'm putting the backing on so that I know when to switch to the braid.
