zeeLandy
do you guys use a mono backing on your reels? such as mono the same diameter of braid?
dfricke1010
That's what I do
AWH
Mono for backing, yes. Diameter doesn't matter. I'll just use whatever old line I might have. You can check the clearance bins for cheap mono too. I picked up several 300 yd spools of 8# to 10# mono a few years back for 97 cents each just to use for backing. delmuts
+ 1 "Mono for backing, yes. Diameter doesn't matter". I've been using a spool of 14# i got as a promotional thing. Works great!
Esox_Magnum
Whatever I got laying around is what I use, think I got a free spool of 17# I have no other use for other than backing.
rymcneil
Stupid question here, what's the point on useing mono for backing?
Esox_Magnum
Keeps the braid from slipping on the spool and lets you fill the reel with cheap line and only having to add 150 yards or so of braid allowing you to spool 2 reels. At $30 and up for 300 yard spools, filling several muskie reels tends to get expensive.
muskymaniac4ever
how often you change line? yearly?
Nick Kuhn
Whenever it looks to be in rough shape. For me it is about every 3 years. I'll be changing because of a few casting incidents that have left me a little low on line.
Esox_Magnum
I reverse mine every season and when it stats looking bad or I get that feeling I change it, but most times like Nick every 3 seasons depending on combo. Seems I have them set so about every year 1 or 2 gets new line.
hunter991
Nope, I don't use any mono backing. I spool electrical tape around the spool a few times then load the braid. So much easier and IMO works better.
HugoBox
I may be cheap but besides keeping the braid from slipping the mono backing is a good way to get two reels filled with one 300 yard spool. I also use a cheap clip on line counter as I'm putting the backing on so that I know when to switch to the braid.
