I was out on Pelican (Wright County) early last week for the first time this season. Did okay...caught some sunnies and a few crappies..I told my buddy about it and then BAM! the lake gets BUSY! It's my fault, blame me when Pelican is fished out by spring! laugh

I agree it's bad to say where the fish are biting as it only increases the traffic on any lake but, it would happen anyways unless all said nothing.

The word will get out with or without these forums. Maybe a bit quicker with a post here.

For an example, I know of a lake close to my area where they are pounding very nice perch. I drove by the lake the other day and could not believe all the traffic on that lake.

Never one post here on FM-HSO about that lake that I have noticed.

Don't be to hard on yourself.

You did miss the boat just like I missed the crappie boat on Red Lake ! Never went up there ! Pelican has definately suffered bigtime . A few years ago I was working at Watertown High School and would hit Pelican on the way home . Almost every fish you got was " Jim Dandy ". Went last week, Not a keeper in the bunch !!

Lol. Yep the lake has been busy for a while! It is true just 2 winters ago about everything you caught was a pig. My biggest Crappie, Gill, and Northern have all come from that lake. However it would be impossible to duplicate that today. What is left are average sized fish with a nice one here and there. Last year to see over 1,000 people out there on a weekend evening was not uncommon and that number is on the low side.

LOL.... your buddy knows ALOT of people!! i doubt by telling your buddy that it changed a thing, by now pelican is far from being a secret. Im surprised there not a Pelican lake tab in the regional forums section yet.

Yes the plan is to drain the lake so it freezes out but not until 2015, there could have been a couple years of GREAT fishing left but too many meat fisherman hear rumors like this and keep "everything"

the debate on why they would drain it is a huge can of worms.

the lake is great, not as good as a few years ago.

fished it the first time this year, missed the boat.

too many guys go out and keep pails full of large fish and too many year classes of fish are being obliterated. nothing wrong with keeping fish, but there won't be much of a fishery left soon anyway when guys keep waaaay more than they can eat at once

I'm confused of what you guys are talking about there are lot's of big fish still left in the lake even with the pressure. Problem, you setup next to a huge crowd your not going to catch the big ones. Get away drill and find your own spot and there are really nice ones to be had. Do your homework and you'll find this lake will produce for years come. Just be prepared to drill lot's of holes and you'll find some nice fish. Unless the DNR does do something but guess what they can't afford to do anything now anyways.

Can someone explain to me the logic of draining a lake that is so popular with fisherman. I know it's for the duck hunters, but will a shallower lake really help ducks that much?
The theory is that by lowering the water level of the lake, the acquatic species that attract waterfowl will return. The lake is mostly a WPA and has been designated as such.

It will probably provide decent fishing even after the levels are lowered but will be more prone to freezing out. This year we could be in for a freeze out with the amount of snow out there.

What snow? Just about all the snow went away with the rain a month ago. People are driving small cars off road out there.

Yes there are still big fish left in the lake but the numbers of them are not even close to what they were even 2 years ago. With the pressure that lake has seen even with its size that would be impossible. I never fish next to the crowds and have done alot of homework out there. For instance if the tournament you fished in a couple weeks ago were held in 09 you would have seen drastically higher numbers at the weigh in and the 1.5lb crappie that won big fish would have been just another fish in the bucket. I agree though a guy can still have a good day of fishing out there.

The snow has been packed down by cars and people, but when you drill you will see a very thick layer of "white ice". This is prevents the sun from getting through. Light not getting through starts a chain of events that lead to low oxygen levels.

This doesn't mean that it is going to "freeze out". It is just a factor that can contribute. I wil see you out there!

I bet the first person to wander out there and do well is really wishing he kept his mouth shut. I could not believe the amount of people out there either. And no, there is not a post anywhere on this site about this particular lake.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
