Chasing Slabs with my Son!

Decided to take my son Collin up north this weekend to spend some quality time together and do some fishing. Got a invite from a friend and headed north to Hill City. I have never fished this area before not to mention it was hard passing the turn off to Palisades which eventually leads to my favorite lake but we stayed the course. The fishing was fantastic and once again dad and son are connected on a level that we both agree only a fish house and being up north can bring. Collin taught me alot this weekend and hopefully he learned a few things from dad. As a parent I forget what it was like being 11 years old and I am glad to have this time for both of us to just sit around and talk. I should mention that Collin totally out fished me all weekend and used T.H.E Jig in pink and white (100th ounce)to catch all of his fish. My kid made me very proud this weekend and I will not soon forget this trip. Enjoy the pictures.

I just had to put this last shot in here. This is on the way home and in my mind Collin is dreaming about all the fish he caught, the one that got away, and doing it all over again real soon!

All of our fish were caught on T.H.E. Jig and we were using spring bobbers. The bite was very light. We were fishing 50 feet of water and the fish were suspended at 30ft. Flashers were a absolute must and the Marcum served us well. I should also mention that we outfished all other anglers in our group

some of those days on the ice w/ my dad are some that I still remember vividly. i will never forget those days and will always appreciate them.

he also taught me some things that i pass to my kids like:

teach him the value of catch and release and respecting your human dominion over your animal companions. keep only what you can eat and if possible leave the biggest fish in the lake to reproduce.

it really takes all of us to be responsible stewards of the sport if the future of fishing is going to be good for our kids.

congrats again and god bless! smile

i cant wait for trips like this with my boys. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. my 3 year old is a bit young yet but i have taken him out a few times just to give him a taste of what daddy is doing when he goes ice fishing. but what is already priceless for me is how excited he gets when he sees me bringing in the days catch to clean. he actually pulls up a chair and sits patiently (picking which fish i need to clean next) and talks about how much he likes the fish and cant wait to eat. haha just a chip off the old block. your story with your boy gets me anxious for the future of fishing with my 2 boys and stories and memories we will have together forever.

Looks like you two had a great time. Thanks for sharing. Though, I'm not financially ready to be a father now hope I can one day share this with my son.

You will never truly be financially ready but you will always be financially responsible. Just remember theres never a "right" time.

I agree with you in every way. There will never be a right time for something. Sometimes you just have to let it happen. However, after growing up in a large low income family. I would prefer to atleast have a good paying job before I have one. I love kids, they'll make the world go round when they come into this world, while they are growing, and while you watch them grow. But I just want my child to grow up and atleast have something that I couldn't.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
