Almost a full moon

Recommended Posts

I know it's my newby-ness compared to most of you, but I just can't seem to capture a good moon image. I've tried my 30d on a tripod with remote trip with varying exposure lengths (usually 2-8 seconds); I've tried using "bulb" but think I screwed that up. So please share your settings and techniques. Thanks.

Swimmer - I am also very much an amateur - wayyyyyyyyyyyyy fewer clicks than most of the folks on this forum. Anyway here's the exif data

Canon 30D ISO 500; 400mm; f5.6; 1/100 sec exposure

This was hand held - I ran out on the deck for about 30 seconds after I got the grandkids to bed smile. We're taking care of the kids at their house and I didn't think to bring the tripod with me - duh!

Another thing that I have learned is to use the burst mode and take several shots at one time - if (I should say when) I'm getting movement when I press/release the shutter, the middle shots tend to be sharpest. I did just a bit of post processsing in iPhoto - sharpening and lightening a bit to get the blue color a little brighter, then cropped it as well.

Keep trying - and keep asking questions - there are lots of very bright folks here who have a wealth of knowledge and are willing to share!

I should have mentioned the only lens I have right now is a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. I have tried it with this lens and with a Canon 100-400L. What stands out in your post is the 1/100 sec exposure time. Maybe I'll try tonight if I can get a clear shot. I should also try a simpler post production program as I have PS CS3 which I don't seem to have time to get to know...it actually has been discouraging me from doing any post processing (you know the layers and all that). Thanks.

My lens is the 100-400L, and you're right, I think the shorter exposure will make a huge difference. The first time I tried any moon shots I started with a couple seconds and then went shorter and shorter - I was amazed at how bright the moon is when you're shooting it in the dark sky. Good luck, lookiing forward to seeing your results.

I have PS Elements and the learning curve is pretty steep, I'm working on it, but often the adjustments in iPhoto do pretty well.
