Ice 55 transducer

I just got a new Humminbird Ice 55 and love it. The auto depth, 6 color, and flat flat screen are a great upgrade from my VX1. My question is what are other Ice 55 owners doing with their transducer set up. Currently I have both the support cable and tranducer cable ran through the float. I'm wondering if others took off the support cable completely? I'm worried about doing this as the transducer cable seems more weak where it connects to actual transducer. Let me know your thoughts and or experiences.

Yep, I never even installed the support cable.

In fact I think people have had issues with the support cable making the transducer not level and having issues reading their baits.

+1 No need to use it. 3 years w/out a problem. wink

That is an interesting theory. I won in ICE45 and it was partially assembled when I got it. I have not been all that impressed and have been using my 20 year old FL-8 because it works better. I am going to remove that support cable and see if that helps.

Thank you.

going on my second yr with my ice 35 and i had the transducer support cable on for the first outing and took it off after that b/c it was a pain in the neck. i read somewhere that the only reason they even have the support cable for the transducer on the birds was a way to get around some copyright/patent infringement, but i could be mistaken.

Patent issues is the reason it was included.

If you do not get the support cable perfectly even on both ends, your transducer will sit at an angle and not give you good performance and a good depth reading.

Take the support cable off and all should be fine.

Take the support cable off. As said previously just make sure you have the transducer firmly connected to the back of the unit - if it is loose it will give you whacked out depth readings.

Personally I dont like the 6 color. The traditional 3 color is good enough for me. My fishing buddy says the ICE-55 is the best thing in his life right now. He is good people, but I will stick with my vx-1 and save the $200 for more Mickeys Malt Beverage (not a great brew but you gotta love the puzzles under the cap). Pass the pickled eggs.

I haven't had my ICE 55 long but I've been using it with the support cable. I have much more slack in the ducer cable and is running outside of the float and the support goes through the float and supports all the weight. Haven't had any issues with it not sitting level or anything of that sort.

To each their own i guess.

You should have left the unit just as I had assembled it, you would have been impressed! See you Friday.

I will bring it with me. Maybe an expert can make sense of it for me. Looking fwd to Friday!!!

Shouldn't you be out scouting?

Scouting is complete, fish are waiting to be had! Make sure you bring the ICE-45 with. Most of the issues people have with the Humminbird units is user error. There are a lot of different settings that can be adjusted to make the end result much better. Still won't make the fish bite but the unit should do everything you need it to do on the ice, plus a lot more!

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
