Agree, they are pretty simple to fish. I will say they are VERY tricky to hook fish with at times though.

Couple tricks I do

1. Use a trailer hook when at all possible

2. Reel as slow as you can given cover and conditions and wait to feel the bite even more than you need to with frogs.

White mouse by far #1 and its not close. Then the clacker buzzbait, then the rage tail. I'd up the rage if the tail didn't rip and tear so often. too expensive of a plastic for that but the design and action lead to the tearing more so than the strikes of fish. All the spooks and poppers are striking me as a bit odd only in that I'm sure these aren't being tossed into heavy matted cover. This matted milfoil and cabage is where I toss the more weedless top waters and this is where I've seen the hogs come from.

the key to fishing jawbreakers on top is (as i found out this summer) PATIENCE! when you get a blow up, drop your rod tip, reel in the slack, have a cup of coffee, make sure you feel the weight of the fish, THEN set the hook.

and like RK said, don't set the hook with a vertical snap. you will miss fish using this presentation, and when you miss, that spoon can come WHISTLING back at your face in a hurry smile

thanks to Meat Run for showng me the ropes on using jawbreakers on leech...made for a heck of a fun summer!

How do you fish Jawbreaker spoons on top? I would assume they sink so you either reel them in fast or fish them on top of pads?

you can fish them in heavy stuff, or along edges. it's a great lure because you can fish it on the top, fish it just under like a wake bait, or let it sink, depending on what triggers the fish on a given day. it was designed (from what i've been told) for fishing in/over the rice beds on leech, and t sure works for that!

I figured you for a Boy Howdy guy, Kimm! Is there anything I know that you don't already do? grin

Not quite as good as hooking them (which can be a disaster if you don't board the fish via landing net), but seeing them pound those baits 4 feet into the air is pretty cool.

Think there are lots of things you know that I don't smile

Learned about the boy howdy from a good old boy from Arkansas and his son when I was working at Camp Fish 20-some years ago. Still use them. Prop baits like them and the Devil's Horse are one of my favorites for open water smallmouths. Bomb them out as far as I can (ML spinning rod and #10 braid), give them a long, hard rip, then let them sit. Smallies will come up a LONG ways to hit them in clear water.

There were days fishing in the bemidji are I could swear I had a jawbreaker tatoo on my leg.. I swear you could read the word jawbreaker.. LOL

I got drilled by my fishing partner one day on Leech. I had a fish on and was kind of paying attention to that when my friend got hit, smoked the hookset, whiffed, and got me with the spoon right in the sternum. Sounded like a croquet mallet hitting a wooden ball. Man did that hurt...
