Bear Hide

Recommended Posts

One of my good friends was/is an avid bear hunter. He is in the reserves and has been living in Missouri for a couple years now and rarely travels back home to his house.

Upon his first trip to Missouri the river flooded unexpectedly in late summer. He has a bunch of land in the river bottoms and called me to run down to the bottoms and fetch 2 of his boats he had left down there. I waded through chin high flood waters and found his two boats. I drug them back up to his house.

At the time I was into trying some taxidermy. Did a bird, and a squirrel and always wanted to do a bear rug. He has several hides from him and his friends hunts in his freezer. He knew I wanted to do a bear rug and gave me one of his hides for saving two of his boats.

This hide has been just sitting in my freezer for a while. I am planning on buying a bit of beef and need to get rid of this bear hide so I can get all the beef in the freezer.

My question is, what are the legalities of getting rid of this hide, or disposing of it. I am not sure of the condition of the hide as its been in a bag in my freezer. The bear is not to large (1 - 1 1/2 yo if I had to guess).

Is anyone interested in the hide, or taking the hide for the skull? ect ect.

Thanks

my cousin does furs and what not and i gave him mine after i got my bear this fall and he pretty much said younger bears like that the hides are worthless cause everyone wants larger rugs, but if you just want to give it away i could give you his contact info im sure he might take it off your hands.

Next time you see him, ask him.

I was going to make a winter hat out of it!

Insanity, I do some hide tanning as a hobby, and I would love to try to do a bear hide. I have quite a bit of experience with fleshing and preparing them, from when I worked for an outfitter in Alaska, but I obviously never got to take one home. I'd be willing to come pick it up sometime. you can shoot me an email at [email protected] if you'd like.

The hide, in my estimation should be good. As long as it has been in a bag and froze the whole time. Some of the "newer" freezers are harder on stuff because they are frost free. But I'd guess that it should be fine.

You will have no issues "gifting" it. However, if you plan on selling any parts, sure you are up to speed with regulations on the sale of bear parts. It varies by state and is not allowed in some states, and only certain parts of some bear can be sold. I'm a taxidermist so I follow and understand these regulations very well.

If a rug seems to be too much work and expensive, you could always do a soft tan wall hanger...Then also have the skull beetled...and if you really want to have something unique, have the skull camo dipped.

Got any questions let me know

No Problem. If you don't have any takers on anything. I'd be interested in the skull if that hasn't been spoken for. Just as long as long as wasn't shot in the head of course.

Maybe you and ac777 can work something out. You skin the head out, send him the hide, its a win win for both of you??

I would rather skin it out, that way I can flesh it at the same time, and dont have to refreeze it, and deal with it slipping. When do you need it gone by?

No hurry, its in my freezer at my dads, I currently live in chaska, and by the end of the month should be in my new house in Jordan.

Where are you living. Depending I might be willing to meet some of the distance.
