DIESELDAN
My coolest story this year was driving from one management area to another saw a rooster sail into a small patch of cane out in a management grassy area. My buddy and I decided to work fast and beeline it to the spot. He went about 200 yards down wind and I was going to walk the cane towards him figureing it would get up wild. I walked about 10 yards into the cane where it was still thin and a rooster got up on my left pulled on him and dropped him as soon as I shot two more roosters got up all the way over to the right swung around two more shots two more downed birds. As those two were falling three more roosters got up straight away pulled on the fourth one and click forgot I still had my plug in from the mornings duck hunt can't say I was dissapointed as I have never shot a triple before but that would have been really cool to get a quad. Funny thing is I don't consider myself a excellent shot but I was on that day. Something I will never forget. And not like we say lots of birds that weekend the day before we were skunked. Just kind of weird running into a bunch of roosters. What are some of you guys most memorible hunts? DieselDan
crappiegetter
Well diesel sounds like that would have been a decent day of hunting to me. Funny story from hunting this year for me would be after duck hunting. After the morning of duck opener a group of us were walking back for the day after only getting one green wing. All morning we heard pheasant all over the place running and flying over. On the walk back my buddy went to take a step forward and right before his foot touched ground a rooster got up right between his legs. It is so funny to watch a 25 year old to darn near mess his pants makes a bad day of hunting a funny one.
DOC33
It was actually last year, but here goes. Walking a WMA in SD last fall, jumped a young skag rooster that got out too far before I could make out it was actually a rooster. I watched it sail across the CRP just to see if it would set down or head off into the adjacent private property. As it neared the edge of the WMA, I almost quit watching but fortunately didn't. All of a sudden, poof, feathers explode and it falls to the ground. I say to the two others with me,"that bird just hit the fence". My dad had also caught a glimpse of the poof of feathers, but wasn't sure what it was from. So I marked the place it went down by the number of fencce posts from the corner and we hunted our way towards it. As we worked up the fence line, I noticed a wad of feathers on the top strand of barbwire. My dog was going bonkers and eventually found the bird buried in the grass still alive. The birds skin was split from wing pit to bottom of breastbone, but still kicking. I've heard of getting a bird without pulling the trigger, i.e. dog grabbing it. But never have I knocked one down from 300 yards away without pulling the trigger Good for me, bad for him.

GSP4EVER
My story is over the course of a year. I got an 8 week old GSP for my birthday in 09. Best gift anybody could ask for. I decided I would train him myself. At 7 months old I decided to see how the training was coming along and we went to a game farm and chased some birds. Everything went well, and I was pleased with our progress. WE continued our training and the next spring I made the biggest mistake ever. I took him to the local gun club where there were a bunch of people shooting trap. After that mess, you guessed it, gunshy. I kept working with him and decided I needed professional help. $450 and 2 weeks later the trainer could not get him passed the .410. He told me that it is probably a lost cause. I worked with him some more and I could not get passed the 410. Shoot the 20 and off to the truck he goes. WE switched our training to boat rides and fishing. He loves the boat and watching the fish in the live well. This fall I could not stand it. I got my stamp and Woody and off we went. The first couple of days the only birds we saw were hens. He did everything like hes supposed too. Then finally a rooster. I have a 12g with me. Its all or nothing. I shoot and he runs between my legs with his tail tucked. I think something clicked for him. He wanted to keep going over to where the rooster went. The next several times we went out I would shoot and he was getting less and less nervous about the gunshot. Im not hitting anything, because my mind is on him and what is he going to do. We are to the point now where I have probably shot at 10 birds with no success. He doesnt even care about the gun anymore. At this point when I shoot and he watches the bird fly away, he turns and looks at as to say," You get on your hands an knees and find the birds, and I will shoot them." Our last time out this fall I decided to hunt a wooded area near a cattail slough. 13 birds in 3.5 hours. I finally hit one. IT was a good year. I can hardly wait for next year. crappiegetter
I have a story similar to that and kind of awkward. Couple of buddies and I where out trap shooting and they wanted to see if their new labs where gun shy. Another buddy had brought his pitbull out as well that was 9 months old. To make a long story short out of the 3 dogs the only one not scared of guns being fired and chasing dead clays was the pitbull, kind of weird to see an untrained dog not even a bird dog fetch birds. CodyDawg
This will be one of those "you-had-to-be-there" stories. I went out a couple days before Christmas by myself. As I am driving up to my hunting land, I see 3 roosters flying toward my swamp when poof! one of them hits a telephone line. I stop and go get it out of the ditch. It is alive but looks like .... well like it just flew into a power line. I held it on my lap and it perked right up after awhile. I was pretty sure it was gonna end up in my bag, but for giggles, i set it down while I got ready...and it exploded out of there and flew away, looking unharmed! I chuckled and proceeded to have the best hunt of the year. Shot 3 roosters, the last with a 25" tail, just slowly walking with the dog in the willows and cattails. Would have had a double, but already had 2 so I couldnt pull the trigger on the 4th....but I did line him up and say "Bang!" just to see if I would have got it. pureinsanity
My dog was being a PITA one day, and the next morning before we started hunting I sat him down and said! Listen here! if you do not get your booty in gear there is going to be a new puppy this spring! 15 minutes later we were on our way back home with a limit. walleye18
Here is a few and one that some of you will not believe.About 15 years ago, I was hunting with some friends in IA. After hunting all day, we decided to go scouting for some fresh places to hunt. Upon coming across a pile of birds flying over the road to their roosting spot we saw a rooster start gliding and was ready to land in the field when out of the CRP a fox jumps up and catches him in air....After about 10 seconds, it was all over. talk about unreal!!! We all still hunt together and talk about it. This late season (after Christmas) I was hunting in ND. The snow was deep...hard to get around for me and the dogs. One of the 4 days I was there, I never fired a shot. The dogs caught 8 birds that day. 3 were roosters!Lastly, while hunting in ND last year (after Christmas) I shot a rooster. It sailed into a snow covered soybean field...I thought it would be gone as my dogs could not get over the drifts in the slough and get to it fast enough - as you know, they run "mach 1" at times. As luck would have it, the bird ran right back into the slough we were in. Me and the dogs went to where it ran in to retrieve it. Only issue was that about 70 birds busted out of here when I shot and the dogs appeared to have a tough go getting scent. I gave up after 15 min. and started walking to the end of the slough. Upon getting to the end, I noticed that my one lab was not in front of me. I called and he did not respond. Just ready to give em some electricity and there he is - about 80 yards away running to me with bird in mouth. Awesome recovery!!!To date, this is the largest bird I have ever taken. 26.5 inch tails.Lesson learned - never give up on the dogs!
Jack Peterson
Buddy shot a bird the last week of the season, and had it sitting in the passenger seat of the truck. He had the window open, and the bird got up and flew out...that's the only good story I have from this year.

I've had a bird come back to life well maybe it never was dead but it was just standing in the back of the truck.Last summer I had an incident with a creek chub. after having him in the water for cats for over an hour I took it up, saw he was floating belly up, took him off the hook and threw it on the sand for cut bait. about an hour later I couldn't figure out what the noise was. turned around and here was that chub doing the crappie flop on the sand. Put him back in my bait bucket, lived to tell another day! Crazy how things like that happen!
Farley
Hunting the edge of my buddies swamp the first day it was frozen enough to walk on. Most of the birds went into the next little slough and as we walked that we kicked up a good 5 or 6 birds and shot maybe 2 rudi's. We had birds getting up behind us so they were sitting really tight. We'll we thought we were done there so we kind of all start walkin to the next rally point and my buddy says "hey, look at Macy". Macy is a 4 year old yellow lab and she was "on point" right between my buddy and I who were probably only 10 feet apart. So I slowly take a couple steps back and start getting ready for what's about to happen when Macy darts in, a rooster jumps out and flies right at my face. Seriously about a foot away from my face. I saw deep into the eyes of the beast and I know he saw mine as well. Needless to say that was the last thing he saw.

Farley
No, too many dogs\people around to start swinging the gun around like a bat. Easily could have though. Its funny how I knew he was there, I knew what was going to happen and it still scared the livin **** out of me. I seriously thought he was in attack mode for a couple seconds. PurpleFloyd
My season was very abbreviated. It started off that we were remodeling the kitchen so several weekends were lost to that project but when it was finally done with that I went out to my Uncles(Who just passed away this fall) to walk his slough with my 10 year old son. Late last year we bought him a 20g Mossberg auto and he didn't get to use it much so he was all fired up to get after them. There is a particular patch of plum brush that I have hunted for 30 some years and it generally always holds birds. So much so that it is nearly impossible to hold the dogs back long enough to get set up for a shot. So I told him to high tail it over to about half way through the patch and I would try to guide the dogs the other way until he was ready. Well, he didn't get as far as i would have liked but I took the other side and sent the dogs in and a few seconds later heard a flush and saw the bird. As I went to draw up my gun the bird exploded and dropped like a stone. He dropped that bird on the first shot stone dead and the dog made a retrieve to him. Now that was priceless. Newby214
The coolest story for me would have to be my first ever SD phesant hunt! We hunted in north eastern SD in the middle of december, all wild birds, on a friends land(NOT a game farm/preserve if you were wondering). I saw over 3,000 birds in 3 days!!! Everyone says how great sd is, but you dont realize how many birds there are out there until you see it! We had a blast out there, there were so many birds the dogs didnt know what to do! charliepete
My buddy and I were hunting in South Dakota this year. There is a little clump of willows on a field edge that always seems to have a bird or two that we have permission on. We were having a tough luck morning so we decided to jump the willows. He let me out and I looped about 400 yards to get on the back of it, and my buddy waited until he could see me and started pinching the front. There are always a couple of birds in there, but this time there were a couple hundred. They were busting out wild, but enough tried to hunker down that when my buddy and I met up in the middle about 20 or so roosters got up within 5 yards of us and tried to fly over a snowed in cut corn field. We dropped 6 birds in a volley and had 4 dead in the air at the same time. The dogs couldn't make up their mind what to retrieve. Pretty cool.
