Stratosman
I want to get one and use if for a panfish set up, no line twist so the lure isn't down there spinning away spooking finicky fish!Just wondering from the guys who use one what kind do you have and what would you recommend? I see Thorne has a couple of the Okuma's....wonder if they are good for the price or is there a better option? Thanks!
OnAFly
For the price, Okuma's are about as good as you can get. The SLV is nice for a larger arbor, while the Sierra is very affordable, while still being very functional. You just have to put more backing on the Sierra. Dark Cloud
The past few years I played around with a few diff reals and settled on the Okuma SLV, picked up 3 of em for this season... There are a ton of options but for the price of the slv's you'll be hard pressed to find a reel lighter with as good of a drag.
Scott M
I've got a Bauer Junior Mac 3 that I shamefully haven't used much for fly angling that I paired up with a Thorne Quiverstik. Might go for the Okumas though. Tough price to beat.
mainbutter
I do.. but only during soft water and casting flies
Stratosman
Hey thanks, I was thinking the Okumas would do the trick, might have to swing in to TB's if I come across some holiday cash! 4/5 about the right size?
Dark Cloud
4/5 or the 2/3... tough call...Im running a 4/5 on a 32in quiverstick and love it. I also have a 2/3 on a 19 inch finesse and a 2/3 on a 24in powernoodle. If you have bigger hands and are going to use it on a longer rod, i'd look at the 4/5. But I also know a bunch of guys that use the smaller reel on "outside" rods.
half-dutch
I got a cheap Martin on a PowerNoodle. Light and you don't have to remove the clicker, but no drag, generally do not need it. I have come to like fishing with it, but don't use it exclusively switching off to UL spinning reels from time to time. Fill the spool almost completely with some sort of spacer or backing or you will be cranking forever to get up and down.
castmaster
When mounting the fly reel to the rod, is the line supposed to come off the bottom of the reel or the top? I've seen it both ways and really wasnt sure which way was right.

slurpie
Fly reels are great for panfish rods. I use cabelas and next time i get there i will get another and try on thee walleye rod. Seems funner catching fish there is no drag to rely on if you dont let go the line will break.
foulpole18
I got a Okuma fly reel for Christmas. I used it for the 1st time on Wednesday. It works sweet. The drag on it is super smooth also. A 3 lb bass was no match for the drag.
castmaster
Is there a way to turn off the clicker on the Okuma SLV's?
Dark Cloud
Is there a way to turn off the clicker on the Okuma SLV's? Yep, I silenced all of mine... Simply screw off the drag controll knob then take the little philips screw out. Attached to the screw will be a little spring with a ball on the end. Remove that spring and replace the screw and drag knob...
