The Black Hole

Personally, I've only lost small items.

People I was with have lost the TV remote, leatherman and their car keys. 3 hours later with the camera in 22' of water, the keys came up. We did have to chisel the hole over 2 feet, because nothing drops straight down and we had no way to move the house, since the truck keys were down 22'.

Brother in law was tying up his brothers new latern onto one of the poles in our portable house and the chain must have sliped his hands and went right into the hole, didnt touch the ice at all. also have seen a buddy drop his cell in the hole, we were trout fishing and it must have sliped out of his pocket, we all saw it go in the hole and he had that look on his face, like no that didnt just happen, we laugh so hard at him.

I have only lost a scooper so far, hope thats all I lose.

30 years ago when I was about 10 and at my late grandfathers cabin I pulled up to his fish house on a snowmobile. It was very cold and I came bustin in and slammed the door hard behind me. He blamed it on the door slamming. but off the shelf went his prized antique ice fishing rod he had had since his early days of ice fishing, and of course it went right down the hole. Never heard the end of it until his last days. "I would be two ahead of you if I had that lucky pole you put down the hole!"

Couple of metal ice scoops last year. Sent my leahterman wave down the hole last year, that sucked as I didn't even know it was gone till I got back to the truck but searched all around and didn't find it so I'm assuming it slid down the hole.

I probably would have lost keys at some point if I hadn't read enough on here about people losing keys. They either go from ignition right into a zipped pocket or just stay in the truck. Don't want to chance it.

yeah, no kidding. I would like to hear the story behind the dog!

Heard story back in the day of a guys black lab diving for a fish through a spearing hole and popping up in another houses hole close by. Not sure I can believe that on though...

Only 2 things lost by me, a 40.00 rod and real( I stepped out of the tent for a sec and when I came back in I asked my buddy where did my rod go? oops, he never saw it go in).

Last year my garmin car gps with brand new lakemaster chip went down the hole.

Metro and I were doing an overnighter years ago on Island lake at about -32 degrees.

Not kidding, coleman fuel would not light with an open flame on it.

In the middle of the night I heard a splash and thought something was coming up one of the holes but could find nothing wrong, so back to sleep I go.

The next morning I'm sending my jigg down the hole and see a white spot in the middle of my veiw. The Co2 detector had fallen off the ceiling and right down the black hole. The crazy thing is that we were in 27 fow and I could see it plain as day so I did take a pic. and I have it somewhere I just can't find it .

My buddy owns a nice big permy. He called me one night and said he was starving because he cooked up a box of mac and cheese on the flip-down two burner stove, and somehow knocked the whole kettle full of hot mac and cheese down the hole and had nothing else to eat!

Another night he dropped a full ring of frozen deer sausage down the hole, and we ended up having to fry up rock bass we were so hungry!

Wedding ring. I was releasing a walleye back down the hole and with the cold and a little slime it just slipped right off and I watched it go down. No camera at the time so not much I could do. Never heard the end of it and I will probably hear about it again today as I get ready to go fishing.

I lost a rod holder down a hole yesterday. I managed to snag it with my spoon. I also saw a girl tos the car keys to another girl quite a few years ago. As she was in the motion, I tried to say "I wouldn't do that", but before I could finish, the keys hit the floor and went right down the hole where the other girl was standing. The next day, my buddies uncle fished the keys out with a magnet. This was in the early 90's, before underwater cameras.

Nothing. I've never lost anything down an ice hole that I can remember at the moment. I can't believe it either.

Last year when this topic came up every other post was "cell phone". That's absolutely astonishing to me. When I go out, it's more fishing, less blabbing. Hope you guys aren't making the other people in your fish house listen to you!

A few questions smile

Why would you go fishing and spend the whole time answering to the wife/girlfriend?

Why would you even bring the thing or leave it on when you're trying to relax?

If you need noise, how 'bout an am/fm radio and a football game?

Why can't you guys hold on to your phones? eek

Oh yeah....the real reason I posted is to mention that I was fishing with my dad several years ago and he was chiseling out the hole with a new chisel. He lost his grip and chucked it right through the ice and it speared the bottom of Trout Lake (Coleraine), standing straight up in 23' of water. The lake is so clear that I could see it just fine. It took a long time, but I managed to hook the lanyard (which he should have been using!) with a treble hook on a parachute cord and retrieve it.

Why is it that you can sit in a boat surrounded by water and not even think about losing anything. But sit near an 8" opening on a huge lake that is covered with ice and constantly be aware of anything that could fit down that hole and still lose stuff?

My phone is also an FM radio and MP3 player, so it comes with me. I've learned, though, with my ice holes, I've cut a 5-gal pail into 1/3rds or 1/4ths, and use that as a sleeve on top of the hole, so if anything hits the ice and goes sliding around, it'll bounce off the side of the sleeve and not go into the hole.

Pack snow around the sleeve, and then drop in a thermal tipup as a cover over the hole, and it helps keep my holes from freezing from day to day, too.

This isn't a "Black Hole" story but funny non the less!

My brother was tying on a jigging rap and attempts to bite off the tag end of the line, as he is trying to bite off the line and pulling on the jigging rap, the line gives way and sends the front end hook up and thru his nose like a pierced earing hangin there. It hurts just thinking about that! blush

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
