Well guys after a lot of thought and looking for used fish houses I went to FF the other day and they had the Eskimo Quickflip 2 on sale for 259 so I ended up just buying it. Wasn't too hard to put together wouldn't want to do it in the weather I did it in today but was not horrible because I knew it was making ICE!!! I have the itch now fellas! I got poles and tackle from the girlfriend for my birthday and just got the house. All that I am looking for is an Ice Auger, and a Flasher...... I am going to try and post some pictures of the Quickflip but I have never done that before. If you guys have any input what so ever on the Auger and Flasher please let me know. I am not looking to buy all new I would prefer used for those two items so I am looking hard now on HSO-Classifieds.....

I'd reccomend a Marcum flasher and a Strike Master Auger.

Both companies make a full line to choose from.

I suppose everyone is entitled to an opinion, right or wrong whistle ... at least I'd agree with your auger choice.

There's enough threads about all the different brands, models, etc, on this site & lots of others. I'd recommend you go into your local shop & see what you like after reading up on them and go from there, MJB wink.

Let's see what the deer says...

im a strike master guy so my vote goes there auger wise! but as far as flashers go there isnt any single one on the market that cant do what you will need it to do, from the bottom end showdown to the top end Fl 22, they will all mark fish. head into your local store and spend some time playing with the display models and find one in your price point or one that you just think is cool, then go home and find a used one On C list or HSO classifieds, chances are you will find it a little cheaper!

I would agree, go to your local sports store and check out the main brands (vexilar, marcum, humminbird). All three brands make a good product that will do a good job marking fish for you. Once you see them first hand it will be easier to pick which you like.

+1 for the strikemaster auger

+12 for the Strikemaster auger, lol.

The best flasher on a budget is probably the LX-1 - most bang for your buck and that's hardly debatable. If you're not on a budget though any one of them will suit your needs nicely and you will be happy with it.

I just got a Jiffy model 75 today. Can't wait to use it!

I bought a Marcum LX5 last year after much personal debate over which to get. I went with a buddy once who had a Vexilar and I was blown away at how sweet it was fishing with that. Felt like cheating to me. But every time I had gone out after that it wasn't near as much fun to me, and I always felt the desire to be using some kind of sonar. I read a lot of threads on whether to get Marcum or Vexilar and decided on Marcum. I love it, but personally feel that either will do the trick. If I remember correctly the Marcum LX5 may have been cheaper than the Vexilar FL-18 or whatever their top one is now.

I'm pretty much out of money in my fishing account now though, so the next big purchase, a flip-over shack, will have to wait until the lottery or a job. I think between all the left-over army gear I have and my Carhartt bibs and jacket that I don't really need a shack. The sonar and auger were more important to me than the shack, although I really would like one.

Sorry for the hijack, MJB blush... just listen to the deer!!! The Vex seemed to calm her down... actually came closer when we fired the Strikemaster grin. She got really annoyed when we wouldn't drill where she told us to, though (pushy native Canadian guides, eh mad!!!)...

Tell us what you end up buying, then come up here and try them out (I know a guide wink... ).

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
