Droid, DroidX, Droid 2, Droid Incred....

Recommended Posts

So its time to get a new phone. I am Verizon and have been pleased with their service, so I will probably renew my contract with them. I am overwhelmed by how many different phones there are to get..

Seems like the Droids are popular and people seem to have good things to say about them.. But which is best? I would like one that is easy to text on. One I can maybe play a few stupid games on, one I can surf the net and check radar and such. Which would be best for me do you think?

(Keep in mind, this is a big step for me.. I have a gzone now. And got it because it was water proof.. which I thought was cool.. )

Yeah, that is a pretty big step DD. smile

In all honesty, you will be happy with any one of those.

Not many differences between the 3. The biggest difference is that the Droid 2 has a slide out keyboard. This makes for easier texting, but at the price of a bigger form factor. Texting on a “virtual” keyboard takes a bit to get used to and there are times I miss a physical keyboard on my DroidX.

The X has the largest screen of the 3 and I haven’t heard anyone complain about it being “too” big.

I’ve heard some knocks on the Incredible’s battery life and maybe signal strength not as strong as the Motorolas. But who knows.

I’ll tell you this, the X is the greatest phone I’ve owned and would replace it in a heartbeat if something happened to it. Another thing to remember is that there is always something better right around the corner and 4g phones will be the next big thing, along with faster processers etc, but at some point, you just have to jump in. I can only speak for one phone and I don’t think you will be disappointed with the X.

I agree with Dtro 100%

However for me the X was to big for me.

The benefit of the x is the HMDI and 8.0 megapixel camera. If you plan on watching videos on your tv or even taking hi def videos but I would never use it.

I love having a keyboard, but I do not use it as much as I thought now that I use swype or talk to text.

As for 4G coverage? The 4G isn't truly available yet. its more of a marketing scheme.... Do some research and you will see yes 4g phones are faster, but reality 4g technology isn't truly hear yet.

Go with what you feel comfortable with. Reality each of the phones can pretty much equally do the same thing. make calls, make texts, play some games and check the weather. I would go play around with them and see which layout you like best and which one feels most comfortable in your hand and if the sales rep has one of the phones of their own ask them if you can put it in your pocket to see what it feels like.

In my opinion the droid x and the droid 2 are pretty much the same less one has a keyboard and one doesn't. Unless you care about camera quality than id go with the X

Just went through the process (I am with Verizon also) with those exact phones. I decided I didn't need a Qwerty keyboard and might as well get used to using the screen one, as they are all going to be that way at some point.

So it was down to the Incredible and the X. I went with the X, mainly do to the large screen size. It just makes everything easier. Both are great phones and my friend likes his Incredible, minus the negatives mentioned above. So far I haven't had any problems with the X and love it. Its a little big in the pocket, but not terrible. I am pretty much used to it already.

Really, you can't go wrong with any of them!! Good Luck!

It is if you have Sprint. wink

LMIT,

weren't you the one who stated a couple months back that Verizon and Sprint use basically the same transmission frequency, or something to that effect. So where someone has Verizon service they should have Sprint service? If so, then shouldn't Verizon customers be able to have 4G service just the same as Sprint?

I too went from a gzone to a Droid and couldn't be happier.

If I were you I would go into the store and see what you like best. Since your not dealing with the crackberry step in the middle like a lot of people do you will never know what your missing with a physical keyboard.

From what I saw you get a little more for your money with the droidx as it comes with a bigger memory card otherwise it's pretty much a wash.

I got to play with all the new stuff and I though in all honesty the incredible and the galaxy were the fastest and most responsive from what I saw. All the new stuff was better than my current Droid though. Any of them would be a huge upgrade, especially from a gzone.

I bought the Droid2 because I thought I needed a physical keyboard, after a few weeks of use it turns out the keyboard sucks and I use the touchscreen 95% of the time.

No matter what phone you get I suggest trying the SwiftKey app, the stock keyboard is laid out pretty bad, SwiftKey fixes most of those issues and adds a word prediction function that is incredible.

I bought the Droid for the physical keypad as well and never use it either.

DD -

You wanna check out my X? I can pick Jack up from school and show you first hand what it can do.

For that matter, I just got Jack's mom a Droid Incredible, I can bring that one as well.

It's been MANY years since I've personally done show and tell at the Primary School.

Turn on swype you will like that even better.

Settings > Language & keyboard > swype

If I am typing something rather long I will use the keyboard. Or if I talk to text I will use the keypad to edit what it messed up because of the ability to navigate with the keyboard arrows versus trying to use the touch screen to get the cursor where I want it to for editing

That sounds like a VZ sales pitch. smile

Do some research, and dig deep you will find out it is in fact true.

My thoughts on 4G:

It's similar to WiFi speeds, the "Mock 4G" that is currently available is only available in a dozen or so major cities. In these major cities is a LARGE network of WiFi open connections. I would just use wifi when in the city.

Just my 2c

You are nit-picking the 4G classification.

The simple fact is that 4G is here and operating now. Albeit not to the "technical specifications" laid out by a standards group, it is up to 10X faster than 3G (hence the next generation) and has rolled out in many more than a dozen cities across the country for Sprint, including Minneapolis.

With that said, I would not solely base my decision to purchase a smart phone on whether or not it is 4G capable. I bought the EVO in June and although it can utilize 4G, that did not factor into the reason as to why I bought the device.

I am not nit-picking at all. Dtro stated something about 4G just around the corner, which is somewhat a fact, and I stated a fact and my opinion about 4G that you clearly disagree with for some reason. I am just trying to give Deitz a little insight on the phones he requested about.

This thread is starting to sound like the healthcare reform thread. Geesh...

The reason I disagree with it is because it's bad information for a prospective buyer. The 4G that is here now (Sprint) or coming by the end of the year (Verizon) may not live up to your standards, but it is up to 10X faster than the current 3G offering, and that may be important to a person looking at a smart phone.

I got use to the virtual keyboard on the MyTouch, which is a smaller screen than the ones you are considering. Personally, I like the Incredible. Not to big, not to small.

Back to the keyboard, mine always guesses what I'm typing so I never need to type the whole word anyway.

How is it bad information when clearly Dietz is asking about Verizon carrier only phones?

I hate that feature I turned that sucker off instantly

I hated the stock version of it also, then I tried SwiftKey and it was like night and day, it's. SO much more advanced and it doesnt automatically change the word unless you tell it to. Sometimes it works so well that you think it's reading your mind, kinda scary. Over time it learns your writing style and will get faster and better as it figures you out.
